A study in Australia showed that adults who spend an hour each day watching TV, DVDs, or videos can be reduced life expectancy of almost 22 minutes. In fact, watching TV an average of 6 (six) hours each day can shorten your life five years. The study, led by Dr Roleh. J. Lennert Veerman from the University of Queensland claims, watching TV is a sedentary lifestyle is bad for health, like smoking and obesity. Moreover, by continuing to watch the TV people will tend not active and eating unhealthy food. The study involved more than 11,000 people aged over 25 years. The study was conducted to calculate the overall risk to the life expectancy of a person from activity watching television. "Watching TV may be associated with reduced life expectancy of a person, which is comparable with the main risk factors of chronic diseases such as obesity," researchers said that includes his research in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. These findings also indicate, habits linger watching television is proportional to the risk factors caused by smoking. Research shows that one cigarette can cut a person's life by 11 minutes, equivalent to half an hour watching TV. Meanwhile, researchers from Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, said the findings were 'very reasonable' because it prolonged TV watching are vulnerable to the occurrence of disease and premature death. In fact, other data show, in addition to obesity, sedentary behaviors such as watching TV craze is also associated with the onset of other diseases such as, high levels of evil Mother in the blood, the risk of heart disease, and more likely to eat foods such as junk food.

I can't believe watching TV only would be harm for your life. If it is only sitting, and staring on the screen, would it really harmful? Yes, it would be harmful if you are sitting too long. Yes, it would be harmful if you are eating unhealthy food while watching TV. Let's say, if I am watching TV one hour everyday for watching news.. Would I lost my age up to 660 minutes in a month? Things that clear here: Everything that is excessive, would be harmful for health xD

i think, this research about wasting time. if we spend much time for watching tv, we will lose our time (age) with useless. it's the same with sleep. sleeping 8 hours perday. you can calculate with your self how much time that we spend just for sleep..

Not really a waste.. If we are watching some program that useful, full-of-information, enrich our knowledge, or so, can we say it would be a total waste? A bit off topic: yes, it would be a total waste if we just watch soap opera or so called "sinetron" in our country. I really can't see the benefits by watching it in hours!

Have you noticed how many people read about that study and read it wrong!? I've seen, "You reduce your life by 22 minutes for every hour that you watch TV!" I've even heard that quoted on TV. So how many hours in your entire life have you spent watching TV? Can you imagine if that was true? If it really is "hours each day". So watching TV 24 hours a day would cost you 24 x 22 min = 528 minutes or less than 10 hours. That isn't bad! What was the correct time definition?

It is indeed a good analysis. I suspect of a manipulation!! But again, if you watch 6 hours per day your life gets shortened by five years...

Hmm I write and I do it sitting down. I also play the piano and I do that sitting down. I think there has to be more then just watching Tv. Any thing you do sitting down is sedentary and it will reduce your life. I watched the info and learned that it is not the watching the Tv, but watching it laying down, sitting down, and not moving around. Why when I heard of this, I first thought that the rays coming from the Tv had this horrible effect of decreasing life. That comes from making a statement and not going into details. That is if one watches Tv, and eats junk food, etc. he decreases his life, but what happens if that person moves around while watching Tv? Does the shortness of life come then?

They do not say that. They just go and say that watching Tv is bad for you without giving a reason why. And if the radiation form Tv is bad, so is the radiation from outside, the radiation from microwave, etc. And they did not go and say that it was because you are sitting down all the time, or laying down or that you do not get a good nights sleep, that when the tv is in the bedroom it is worse then in a living room, just that watching tv shortens your life.

Well, I can explain how this study is true, although I am no doctor, nor do I have any accreditation, but I do have the answer as to how this happens. In my extensive, conductive research, there is a reason as to why our life expectancy is reduced 22 minutes for every hour of television viewing. In my research, I have learned that with the amount of terrible programming on television these days, one finds that they have wasted this amount of time watching the worthless program instead of doing something productive. Now how does this account for the missing 36 minutes? One may have gone to the restroom, answered a telephone, went to check on preparing food, or something other than watching the bad show. Remember, I am not a doctor, nor am I accredited in any way shape or form, but this comes from simple observation. We all have done this. Admit it.

Those are statistics, of course. Noone knows how much he or she is going to live and the only thing we know is that we are mortals. Sedentary life is not god for the human being. Yet modern life (that permts better life expentancy) includes living in big cities, having to go to work in cars or public transportation (seated) work seated and, when at home, sit still to rest a little. In many cities of the world there are not enough places to take a walk. In some others there are sidewalks but it´s too dangerous to walk by. I think the researcher is nuts. I´d research something if I could change the outcome with it.

yes, that's true. we can't predict when we will die.. and this research is just as a reference only and may be the only researcher trying to investigate and make a scientific article from the research that.

I don't think that is a misconception. It is not watching TV that reduces the length of life of the person but his inability to exercise, eat good food and sleep substantially. A person who exercises at least 45 to an hour a day, eats more veggies and fruits and avoids unhealthy and junk foods, and also gets early and enough sleep is expected (by God's grace) is bound to live long even if he watches TV for an hour or more.

A lot of people sit infront of the computers now, rather than a tv set, i thought. They say that there are a lot of things that are bad for our health and those things people still do, so i can not see people changing the way that they live to be honest.People can walk out in front of a bus and die, people that drive can die in a car crash, yet people still drive etc.No one can say when we are all going to die.

It's an easy assumption to make. Sitting around for lots of hours watching TV may make you unhealthy which may cause you to die younger. Well didn't we already know that?

I read about the study in paper. And the question in my mind came: How long am I going to live? Wish I could see in crystal ball! Say, I was fated to live for 112 years when I was born. In that case I should start watching a lot of TV. Maybe 6 hours a day. For me, living too long is not going to be living quite happily. OK I will tell my friend to watch TV 2 hours a day. That way his life expectancy decay will remain same while we (the people around him) will be saved from harms of second hand smoking. LOL

The end of life comes when it is time to come. If we keep ourselves healthy, by eating correctly, and are not overweight or have diabetes, I can't see that watching TV a few hours each day is going to shorten our life. How would they know. People live longer these days than they did say 50 years ago. 50 years ago, people didn't watch very much TV and did live as long as people live today, so the stats are wrong somewhere! _Derek

I wonder if it is a sedentary life style or TV? I have difficulty walking, so I watch a lot of TV. I also read a lot, do crosswords etc. All are sedentary habits, but I try and exercise everyday also. There is a limit to what I am capable of, but at least I make the effort. Laughter is supposed to be good for your outlook and health. It would seem if that is true, then watching sitcoms should be good for you.

If one really read closer, the way how this is reported seems to point to how TV watching is so bad. Here, watching TV is linked to smoking and eating junk food. Of course, if you smoke and eat junk food everyday, that makes people unhealthy. But not every TV watchers smoke and many avoid eating junk. This is the kind of article or piece of reporting that is meant to grab people's attention. It doesn't tell what kind of adults are the participants of this study. It may not cover things like playing video games in front of TV monitors.

Hi there! Watching TV is no good..then what about doing things in front of the computer for long hours???(^^) I believe that we should just go for moderation. Moderation is not just for food intakes but for activities we did as well~I don't like watching TV much because we just watching it..less activity not good for the brain..(^^)

I believe in being positive. Obviously if the person spend 6 hours a day watching should be sentence heavily. Tv nowadays are not just for entertainment but also as an information tools. What a lazy topic of survey that are subject of discussion.
