Among the dogs, shih tzus are not that intelligent at all. But my Grumble was an exception. He was really smart and my heart broke when he got hit by a bus. My son and i cried for days. Now all we have left is Gary and to be honest he is my least favorite. I always think he's a typical dumb shih tzu but lately i've noticed that he's really smart.
Except for the sun bathing thing, Gary would know very well if we are going to leave the house. He would run out of the door and would jump right into the car when the car door is open. It would be very difficult to get him out. A few days ago my husband told me that Gary is our house help's alarm clock. Every morning, he would knock on our helper's door to wake her up and prepare breakfast for us! I didn't believe at first thinking my husband was just joking, so i called the helper and asked her and she confirmed it!
So Gary is not that stupid at all!

Your dog reminds me of our dog. She also acts like that whenever she hears the car starting and when she knows that we will be leaving. When I was still studying, she would come up to our bed and lick us(my sisters and I) to wake us up in the morning so we could prepare for school. Before she wakes us up, she would wake my mom first at around 5 am in the morning so she could go for a walk outside and so that my mom could buy fresh bread by the bakery. Dogs are a lot of wonders! They just surprise you each day :D

I thought shih tzu doesn't like hot places, why is your dog loves to sun bathe? My shih tzu hates the sun and hot weather, he usually hides away from the sun and just lay down on the marble floor since it is cold.
Anyway at first I thought my dog also was stupid not until I notice him saving food for lunch. I am training him to eat only twice a day breakfast and dinner, so if I ever got a day job it will easy for him and his metabolism to adopt. I always put 2 medium cups of kibble every meal. What I notice is that he saves some of his breakfast for his lunch, but I also give him the same amount of kibbles for his dinner but he eats everything and nothing is left when dinner time. I was surprise by his action and thought that he is a smart one. And I also read a book about shih tzu that they are one of the smartest toy dog.

I think that book is lying. Poodle is smarter than shih tzus and actually the smartest among the toy dogs are the bichon frises. Actually i was looking for a bichon frise but couldn't find a reputable breeder.
I free feed my dog since that's the advice of my breeder.

yes, Toni shih tzu (is this the spelling?
)is a smart dog also.
In our house we have two play dogs aside from the 3 askals staying in our front yard. We have a shih tzu and a pug in the backyard.
They stay at our backyard , where they have their dog houses. I would always call the pug, and she would be jealous. She would quarrel the pug, as if telling her," get out so i can have the attention". She would make a sound whenever i am there attracting my attention. Then she would make her eyes so pitiful, that you cannot help but play with her instead.
She''s actually smarter than the pug.
