Hi mylotters! I am very passionate about environmental conservation and I sincerely do my bit in daily life which serves the purpose, no matter how small a deed it is. Like switching off lights, A/C, fans etc when not in use, not wasting water and so on. I avoid using polythene bags while shopping and take my own cloth bags from home whenever possible. Let's discuss some of such ways which we can practice in our daily lives that would contribute in environmental conservation. Each one of us may have different ideas and experiences which would help others who are interested in this noble deed.

to conserve energy ...all lighting fixtures in the house are using CFL light bulbs. we are no longer using incandescent lighting bulbs or the flourescent bulbs. most of our mall are still using the polythene bags for our groceries and shopped items. we keep the bags and reuse it for segregating our garbage.

Yes, CFLs are being promoted and used more these days to conserve energy. But in India, specially in rural areas, lot of people are still using incandescent lamps. Now, a new technology is set to replace CFLs too - LED! They are said to be more efficient, having longer life. If they are affordable, we can start using them now.

People must start using them so that they get cheaper. Let the richer ones use it and make it affordable for us! :P But when we can pay more bucks for our Televisions, why not for bulbs?! Even though I wouldn't prefer buying LEDs now, I just wonder why don't we think in that way?

that's the biggest problem there...LED's are not very affordable at these times. they are not mass produced yet that's why they're not cheap...unlike the CFL's which are cheaper and are very affordable to everyone.

The biggest obstacle is that most people claim to be in favour of protecting the environment but always leave it to others rather than inconvenience their own lives.

I agree. The self-proclaimed environmental activists and non-profit organizations are a great example. Since I am working in one such place, I see such hypocrites around me :(

I like to get the plastic bags, because I can reuse them at home, trash can liners, picking up cans, etc

but for those things a few bags are enough right? you can collect plastic bags once in a while when u can't take other bags to the market. But i feel we must try our best to avoid plastic bags

well, part of taking cloth bags is the checkers tend to overload them, I have enough trouble with that with plastic ones! And my client uses 10-12 bags a week for trash right now, I often have to take them from my house to hers because she doesn't get enough... I reuse the little bags that come with meals on wheels for my kitchen trash, or other little bags that I empty, I never throw away a bag unless its so torn up by overloading that its unusable - not only do I use them at the house, take them to my client, but, again, I collect aluminum cans with them. But, I do also take home all my client's recycling, because I really do believe in not wasting resources, its just the bags thing... if I'm only getting 1 or 2 things, I don't get bags... oh, and I live in Austin Texas, which is the home base for Whole Foods... http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/
