Travel time is coming our way soon! We are going to Amsterdam this Winter. My problem is finding information about Amsterdam. It obviously isn't a tourist destination like Mexico or Jamaica. I always like to know about where I'm going before asking for talking to our travel agent for information. My reason for that is it tends to generate a lot of communication (junk mail) we won't ever need. Have you ever been to Amsterdam and have any recommendations or reviews? Thanks and have a great day!

I expect that you have greatly offended the residents of Amsterdam! It is very much a tourist destination. What's more, it is a city - not like Mexico or Jamaica which are countries.
You might visit a local school to brush up your geography, if you don't want the travel agent's advise.

Only when I landed there. I spent two weeks in the Netherlands though..south of Amsterdam mostly and visited several places that my kids took me to...so I am not much help. Also took a few side trips to Germany and Belgium...it was fun. But I am not sure what you could do in Amsterdam...sorry.

I visited Amsterdam with a friend when I was just 17 years old. We found it very easy to travel there by ship and trains. We liked walking around its picturesque streets and seeing its lovely canals. The highlight was seeing Anne Frank's House.
When I was in my mid twenties I studied in the Netherlands for four months. A friend came out to visit me and we went to Amsterdam for a long weekend. I used a Lonely Planet guide book to find somewhere for us to stay. I took my own bike and my friend hired a bike. We had a delightful time.
Also on my own I saw Amsterdam and went to some other places nearby. I loved visiting Delft where the blue Dutch pottery is made. I went to Corrie Ten Boom's House. She was a Dutch person that saved many Jewish people in World War II. I would highly recommend going for days out from Amsterdam on trains. In Amsterdam the trams are fun to ride around on. Have a wonderful time in the friendly Netherlands.

As to whether Amsterdam as a major tourist destination: I guess it would help if I spelled it right! Yup, it's Am, not An. Oops!
It's the train trips we are interested in. I was hoping someone would tell me their opinion of the trains there. Ours are nasty.

I have been to Amsterdam once, and that was some years back. I was very impressed with the city, very beautiful. One thing I remembered while touring around in the city was the boatride along the canal. That was one of the unique attractions for tourists about Amsterdam, I would say.

As others have said, Amsterdam is a major tourist destination.
Just Googling "Amsterdam" brings up a great deal of links, including the one to Lonely Planet's take on the city. Wikitravel, Time Out, and numerous other sites have plenty of information to offer as well. There are also hundreds of recent books devoted to the city.
