Is spoon necessary while eating?

India

Today when I went the restaurant with my daughter and we both ordered Masala Dosa. My daughter was eating by spoon but I was eating by hand. Suddenly my daughter said me ohhh Mom dont use hand please use spoon the others are seeing you. I tell her ohhh dear daughter dont see the others I cant eat by spoon and when God give us the hand why use spoon. I feel uncomfortable with spoon because it is very hard to make pieces of Dosa. What you think it is necessary to use spoon while eating or if anyone feel uncomfortable then they can use hand. I not feel bad even the people are seeing me. Dont care of this.

Although there are preferences between countries and cultures, my opinion really is what one is comfortable with. There are many who only use utensils and will not use their hands. For me depends on what I am eating and if I can eat it without the utensil, I will dig in with my hands. There are times too that I use my utensils depending on the meal I am eating.

Spoons are needed when eating soup, oatmeal, pudding etc. There are some foods that are easier to ear with your hands like fried chicken or crabs. I don't know what a masala dosa is so I don't know what's necessary to eat it. I prefer using utensils to eat rather than my hands because I hate for my hands to get that messy.

I think it is okay to use our hands when eating in a restaurant. In my country, we have different races and cultures. So whenever I visit an Indian restaurant, I would use my hand to eat as I like to follow their culture. If I go to a Chinese restaurant, then I would use chopsticks to eat. I too don't feel bad when people see how I eat, so long as I am comfortable with it and my stomach is filled.

I don't see any reason to hide the way we eat, right? So long as we are enjoying our food the way we like it, I don't see why we should hide.

As for me, I don't care much what other people think about me, so long as I am enjoying myself and the food I eat.

Eating dosa with a spoon is really difficult and being an indian i would say i would prefer eating with hand than spoon except for some exceptional dishes in which spoon is unavoidable. And i would also not mind people watching me, because i would consider my comfort in eating first.

In my country we have things like manners and etiquette. It's considered good manners to use utensils when dining at the table or at a restaurant. If the dish is roast chicken or lamb chops or similar, as much of the meat as possible is cut off using a knife and fork then you can use one hand to chew the bone to remove any other meat. There are some dining situations that are considered informal...eating pizza, eating fish and chips out doors or at a party or buffet where "finger food" is served. This last is always done with a napkin/serviette in hand. In a situation where there are utensils set on the table I would use them as the presence of utensils means they are meant to be used. I would not want to embarrass other diners or lose my own dignity by the use of my hands or fingers.

Yes if your food is with soup and not dried. But if you feel comfortable using your hand only that is fine also as long as you carry the way you eat. There are places that all people who eat there are not using spoon and fork. And there are some places or country that not use spoon when eating... It is depend upon you if you feel good then why you make yourself unhappy by your spoon....? Let go to eat in hand only... that is your way and you are free.... but you put first into places and occasion where you are my friend....

What kind of food is Masala Dosa anyway? I think it is fine to eat either by hand or by spoon...it just depends on the person on which one he or she is comfortable in. But some people aren't very pen minded s it's better not to use hands in eating in public.

The British always used to eat their fish 'n chips by hand out of newspaper. It just doesn't taste the same any other way! And how do you attack a piece of fried chicken? Do a balancing act with a knife and fork? There are many foods that need your hands! I don't care if it's in a restaurant or not.

Sometimes you need to use your hands to eat it properly. I think you can make your own choice how to eat certain food. You can eat it in a respectful manner with your hands or with fork and knife or using a spoon. All options are right in an appropriate manner.

Hello my friend Fantabulus! I don't like eat with fork and knife I love to eat with spoon but here they look at you rare if you don't eat with fork and knife,so when I am in a restaurant I use it, but for me it is a way to simulate something that you aren't for me that is to be hypocrisy, because like you say God gave our beautiful hands, so let's use them! there is a verse in the bible that talk about the hypocrites that were talking bad about Jesus because they wash their hands to eat, and Jesus said that what we have to do is wash our dirty hearts.

I think it is necessary for hygienic reason. Especially if we are outside, we may never know what bacteria are around. I think it is also healthy for your child if she will not see you doing that outside, as she said, people will be looking at you. I know it maybe something you are comfortable doing and other people should not care about that. But when we eat out, maybe it will also make others feel uncomfortable. It depends on the place. If it is a decent restaurant, then I think it is not proper. But if it is a place where people really eat by hand, then I don't see any problem. My husband also love to eat by hand, especially when he eats chicken, but when we are out he does not because he is feeling uncomfortable when people stare. What we do is just take the food at home and then eat it in the most comfortable way we way, by hand.

it is not necessary to eat with spoon, I agree with you God gave us hands and they are best for eating with. There was one research held and doctors found that, there are more germs on washed spoon compared to wet hands.

Hi daud It is true what the research says. Some restaurants don't wash their utensils very clean. Sometimes you can feel the greasiness is still there. Most of the time, I had to wash them again or maybe use a tissue to wipe it clean before I use them to eat.

It really is cultural. I'll eat a hamburger and fries at McDonald's or felafel with my hands and sometimes pizza if it's a cheep street seller. With most foods I use a fork and knife. I prefer it. I know people who even eat hamburger with a fork and knife. About the only thing I use a spoon for is soup or ice cream.

For me yes if it is not kamayan restaurant but using spoon can make your hand easily to move so that no reason to said my stomach is ache because of when you eat you don't use spoon.

It mostly depends on your culture. I have a friend that comes from another culture and she uses her hands to eat just about everything. I don't see anything wrong with it other than it could be unsanitary. Here in the States we use silverware for just about everything. There are some things that you must eat with your hands, but for the most part we don't.

Table etiquette would dictate that eating by hand is impolite and quite unpleasant to look at. Especially if you're at a restaurant or an event or somewhere public, its really disturbing. But if you're at home, then there is absolutely no problem. Just don't do it in front of young children coz they may think its alright and they might copy what you're doing.

I also like eating by hand, expecially when i am eating pork ribs. In my country, people use chopsticks. But I alway think it is difficut to eat pork ribs with choopsticks, but by hands, it is more vonvenient. And by this way, I can taste the ribs original flavour. But I cann't do this in front of my mother, she must be yelling at me, 'Look, what you are doing. It is wildness behaving.' I don't understand why people blame the prmitive ways in the morden life, but the both are not conflict.

My opinion in this case, is it depends in where we are, and what we eat. i usually eat using spoon and hands as well, when i was to eat vegetable with fried chicken, i use spoon and hands together. here, i feel i don't care about others who see me. It is a public place. haha....
