"Glass House" Grrrrrrrr

Our dream home - SOLITAIRE - It is christened SOLITAIRE but not many call it that way

It took us months to choose a name for our house that I designed and after a lot of higgling haggling we decided on the name SOLITAIRE. We are proud of this name but not many know how hurt we feel when it is called the Glass House just because it has 31 glass windows!

I am sure the one who named your house "the glass house" was not the postman. If he was to name your house, he would probably name it "the house with the big, scarry dog". Now, leaving the joke aside, you must not be so sad your friends don't... remember the name of your dream house. Maybe they just want to tease you, knowing that you suffer so much. Don't show them that you are hurt by their "mistake". Just use "Solitaire" when you refer to your house and pretend you don't hear when they intentionally call it "the glass house". In time you will see they come to the name you gave to your dream house.

Wow, can tell we love dogs, we both mentioned it in our replies... and I agree, that is what the postal carrier would call the house..

The secret is inu my Preiti is mild as a lamb but her bark scares people away. And about Solitaire what hurts me is even those who know I don't like it being called Glass House use this term when they want to tell the taxi or auto driver 'where to'. I keep correcting but I know this name Glass House has spread far and wide!

You still have a chance while I always think about dogs. I am hopeless But you can't look at the beautiful house and garden without noticing the beautiful dog. Don't you think?

I got a close look and it is a beautiful home, and the dog is awesome too... I wonder though, is this s tradition or something to name a house? Because the only time I give name to a house is when I don't know the owner's name, except I name it for what it looks like, for example the red house or brick house, and the one that got me curious enough to come here, the "glass house" The glass house is a home with lots of windows, bigger than yours, and the man that lived there wasn't very nice, so I never got his name and so I call him the man that lives in the glass house..

But people that live in SOLITAIRE are wonderful people. Many have properties on which they build their own homes and the houses are named surely. When there are people with the same names then the name of the house is mentioned while looking for directions and this is where it happens. Glass House, if you please Grrrrr once again. I get upset when my very own who are visiting us for the first time say it to find the place easily as all taxi owners and even some shops know only this name! But what we are afraid is that soon the name SOLITAIRE will get into oblivion. That doggie that you see in the photo is our Preiti, now 4 years old.

Hi all! To me Solitaire sounds an awesome name and you should stick to it. Please do not bother about those who say your house as 'glass house'. They do not know that more windows are great source of natural light and air and it will not only give you more sun light but good amount of ventilation. You can see fantastic views from closed or open your windows, which they might be missing. Actually, they might be feeling jealous of your achievements, so let them be and you keep enjoying in your new house.

I won't trade that name for anything in the world but it does hurt when just to get directions these 'traitors' also call it the glass house these days!.Yes dpk We have a good view all around but it is quite a task maintaining.

You stick to the name. Forget about traitors, they just are insane and feel jealous of your beautiful house. I can understand that it would require hard work to maintain, but remember - everything comes at a price.

Your house is lovely. Personally I don't think 'glass house' is such a great name for it, ..I've seen many houses with a lot more more glass. Since the name is sticking, how about if you join them, not fight them and call it GLASS HOUSE SOLITAIRE.

so you designed and built your own house, thats exciting. and it has 31 windows! so you must have deliberately chosen to have a lot of glass in the design, so in many ways the name other people use to identify your home is really a compliment. it suggests your design was effective, it has had an impact, it has its own name, given to it by the neighbours! i can understand why you would prefer it to be known by the name you have chosen, and that in some ways "glass house" is linked with the unfortunate saying about people in glass houses not throwing stones. but its actually a nice name, and that it has been given a name really is a compliment, it means it stands out. after all not every house gets its own name from the people who live somewhere, it means it is significant architecturally. so take it as a compliment, is my advice, and then gently remind people of its real name!

I am in many ways a positive thinker francesca but in this case I just cannot accept this name. It took us ages to select this name and to think that someone somewhere has given it a new name is not acceptable to me!

i can undestand that, but we can't control the reactions of other people. and the trouble with a house, or any other building, is that though we may own it, it is not a possession that we can keep inside our home and no one else sees, it is part of the built environment, so other people see it too. it becomes part of their consciousness, you cannot control the reactions other people have to what you have placed in their view, and in their environment, and in their lives.

That is a lot of windows, but it does look very nice. Maybe you need to somehow be able to figure out a way to put the Name Solitaire somewhere for people to be able to see and know that that is the name of it so they can quit refering to it as the Glass House.

It has more to do with what one sees. They see glass everywhere!I sometimes wonder why people cannot use the right name and this applies to people as well. Why have nicknames, I wonder!

Solitaire - House name - with diamond
There's a difference between a name and a nickname. A name is given by the owner, usually with due thought and attention to make the meaning fit the person or thing. A nickname is given, usually by other people, to describe an outstanding or unusual feature and they can often be humorous and hurtful. Probably houses with so much glass are uncommon where you live, so it has earned this name through being different (and easily identifiable as such). In England, a 'glass house' is another name for a greenhouse (or a house made of glass used to propagate and grow tender plants). We have a saying: "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.", meaning that if your own reputation is far from perfect, you shouldn't criticise others. Of course, I cannot say that it applies to you in any way! I like the name Solitaire. I don't know for what reasons you chose it but, in French, it means something standing alone (as in a 'solitaire diamond' - which also, it should be noted, has many facets or 'windows' - or the card game 'Solitaire', which is a game for one player. As such, it derives from the Latin 'solus', meaning alone or single and the Latin name for the Sun - 'Sol' - may be related to it. You may have also thought of it as a pun meaning 'sun' (sol) and (et) 'air'. Let those who appreciate your dream house and the people who live in it call it by its proper name - Solitaire - and those who are ignorant and uneducated refer to it as 'The Glass House'. I wouldn't pay them a second thought (but I would erect a ridiculously large sign with the proper name on it ... and a picture of a single, sparkling diamond!

My house stands apart and therefore the name Solitaire. We knew what different meanings Solitaire has but since the design of my house which by the way was my creation was different from anyone we had seen we thought it deserved that name. It has a roof that has marble chips and so are the exterior walls. There are no shutters for windows but glass louvers. We have no curtains but venetian blinds - all these features are not seen anywhere. Yes. It sure is a sparkling diamond. I have also heard of that saying. "People who live in glass houses should not throw stones"and you are right those who live in there are good people! But what scares us is when kids play with a hard ball outside our gate!

A rose cannot smell less sweet because you call it by any other name[Shakespeare]\ isn't it allknowing! If it is someone within your known circle just tell them politely that you like it better as 'solitaire". If they are people who maatter then they may also do so.If it is some third party it really does not matter.Take heart. Secondly, if it is some servant or some person in the street, then they would naturally choose what is easy for them. "Glass house" is none the less. What is precious to us is always precious irrespective of who calls it what.

I wanted to perpetuate the name SOLITAIRE and expected my near and dear one's to stick to the name atleast in the initial stages so that it stayed that way on a long term basis. Someone somewhere called it the Glass House - probably a taxi driver and so when these people searched for the address and fumbled the taxi driver perhaps said "Are you looking for the Glass House and must have also justified why he called it so" and now we have to live with it. Not fair kala. Not fair at all. I can write a book on how hard it was for us to decide on a name and now this!

It's a house. It may be your dream, but it's not theirs. Children are starving in Somalia, our long-range weather forecasting abilities are being cut, numerous species are facing extinction, we are in a Post-Peak Oil world... Needless to say, the name of a house is a rather minor thing to most of us. I name computers. I name cars. I don't, however, expect others to care about the fact that I've done so.

Woah! 31 glass windows? I am sorry, that caught me, more than the nice name.LOL. Well, glass house is a nice name if not for the fact that it was used as title of a movie that depicts the owners to be bad people. I am sure that you are not like them. But still, glass house is kinda cool. Why do you call it solitaire by the way? I find it strange naming a house as we do not have that kind of culture. Is it really something that you do in your place? I mean, naming a house?

All independent dwellings have names here. Solitaire as you know is a diamond set apart and we felt our dream house was one such diamond set apart. No we are not like those who are depicted in that movie you mention!
