Does your voice in a voice recorder differs from your voice in actual? Because I think mine does. I interviewed someone and I recorded it and as I transcribe the recording, and as I listen to my own voice, I can't believe that it's me. I mean, I can't recognize my own voice! Or I have a hearing problem? lol It's the same with other gadgets, voice recorders, cellphones, even when I'm talking in a video cam. I feel it's really different. What about you guys?

my voice sounds really different when recorded as well. it definitely doesn't sound like what I think my voice sounds like. I think this is true for many people though.

I know!! I sound so different when I record my voice too. It does sound like me at all. But when I ask my sis or mom if I sound like that all the time, they say yes!

Apparently yes. Why don't you take your recorded thing and ask a friend or whoever and ask then if you sound that way always?

Hi secretbear, when listening to my voice from a recorder a day many years before I could hardly believe it's my voice. oh gosh, what an awesome surprise! it's not the voice that I wish to hear. I always thought that my voice is sweet and melodious lol... I regretted deathly to let my friends to record my voice and my so-called sweet voice was shattered to pieces since that awful moment Might be to others, especially my loved ones it's still melodious Happy posting and have a nice day!

Lol! I know what you mean though mine's not on a records XD My friends loves to sing. Most of the time when they go to a karaoke bar, they would sing their hearts out and I'll just cheer XD I really don't understand it... Even my friends don't. When I sing without the mike, my voice and pitch's ok but when I sing with mike, my voice is all over and I'm somewhat tone deaf (which I'm not!!!) XD That's why whenever my friends go to karaokes, I'd just cheer on them but NEVER sing XD

It's the mic's problem! My voice sounds different, too when I sing on a mic. But nevertheless, I love singing in the karaoke!

Just tell them that they should not complain since they hear it for free, you're not asking them to pay for it.

our voice, as we hear it, is not as other people hear it, as we hear it through our heads, so we never hear our voice exactly as it sounds to other people. however, most voice recorders are very poor quality, and it is extremely unlikely that they will record your voices accurately. a voice creates a soundwave, and to accurately record it is very hard and needs expensive equipment, and analog recording systems create a better representation of the human voice than digital, but a poor quality analog recording will not accurately record your voice anymore than a poor quality digital recorder. so don't worry you don't really sound like that, but then neither do you sound exactly like what you hear youself as. i see it as being like a mirror, when we look in the mirror we only ever see a mirror image of ourselves, the wrong way round. though the similarity isn't exact, it works for me!

That sounds a little complicated but when you made the analogy with the mirror, I got what you meant with the recorder. However, how about the difference in the way people hear our voice? That's really interesting to know. I guess that's why some people do not like my voice when I'm singing while some people like it.

I will try what those folk singers did the next time I will sing over a mic.
2 Sep 11
yes. for a while when there was a folk music revival in the UK, in the 1970s, it became a joke that every folk singer performed with their hand cupped behind their ear, i can't describe it exactly but an appropriate search should provide an example, so they could hear how their voice really sounded, it might be worth trying that. also singing voices are a matter of taste, there are a few very popular singers whose singing voice i don't like, and a few less popular whose voices i do, so as long as there are a few who do like you i shouldn' worry about the ones who don't.

everyones voice changes if we record it. this may be due to change in some frequency of the receiving signal.even my voice seems to be different when its been recorded i too feel it's really different........:)

Hi santhosh93 - This s not actually true. The way we hear our voice is not the same as how others hear us which is natural when you think about it. If you record your voice you will sound different to how you thought you sounded but your friends will tell you that that is actually how you truly sound. It's the same as we never see ourselves the way others see us...unless we look at a photograph. What we see in the mirror is not the same as what someone sees when they are facing us.

Really? So the reason is the frequency? How is that?

SAme here....I also recorded me singing my favorite song and it didn't sound anything like what I think I sound like! I don't know what made the difference...but if you played it in a large room someplace and I walked in I wouldn't even know it was me!

When I begin to learn in English, my teacher ask me to have a tape record to help me correct my pronunciation. So I read the text before the tape, then after hear the record, I cannot believe that was my voice. It sounds quite abnormal with no tones, ugly to hear. After that I try to change it. After the voice from the tape become better and better, my oral English become the best in my class.

Good for you! We did not do that back in school. I think that's a good way to practice better pronunciation.

i also notice that my voice is a lot different being heard from gadgets like these. i can also think that it's the work of the electronic gadgets. there could be certain magnification or amplification or something that made our voice a little different from the normal voice.

I think everybody has this problem. I think it has something to do with the fact the when we talk we hear our voice from inside and outside as well, and when we hear it recorded, we just hear it from the outside and that causes the difference. I have a very strange voice when I hear it recorded, but I guess everybody feels the same when hears his own voice.

As far as the responses go, yeah, most people have this kind of.. well, I can't really call it a problem. It's not a problem for me, at least. I just noticed it. But I think what you said is another point to consider. Maybe hearing it from one side really affects it, too.

Me too, my voice is different in the recording. I only learned this when i entered the call center industry. Our team was listening to one recorded call, and i thought that the voice on the recording doesn't sound good. Then in the end, i learned that the voice belongs to me... wahhh...

Exactly! I sounded like that, too! As if I was talking through my nose like I'm trying to prevent my voice from coming out. I wonder how it is for those people who already have high-pitch voices..

Yeah, I think electronics do makes voice sound different, telephones, microsphones, anything... They aren't really perfect so they can't really record or reflect your voice the way it really sounds like.. My voice differs too when I am on the phone..

Yeah, I read somewhere that it happens. Probably because your voice passes through your body and gets into your ear directly, so the frequency's a bit different. My guess.

Same here! My actual voice seems different from my recorded voice. When I play the recording back, I feel ashamed because I sound like a child! I've always thought that I have a deep set voice. But all my recordings make me sound like a teenager. Sigh! :(

I think I'm getting a trend. Most of the responses here said their voice pitch is higher if recorded compared with their actual voice.

That's true! I also can't recognize my voice because they differ in different recorders. I have recorded myself in an mp4, cellphone and it's just not me, I'd say. It's funny right? Haha.

Yeah! I recently did an English podcast with my group of friends for an assignment. We all recorded our voices and I sounded really weird! Apparently, the voice you hear when you talk is quite different to the voice others hear or how electronics record your voice. Even though I do not sound anything like my Mum, when I pick up the phone, everyone thinks I'm my Mum. It's odd hearing yourself from a recording.

Someone also told me that I sound like one of my co-workers over the phone but I really don't think so. Sometimes I feel like me and my sister has the same pitch but others don't think so. It's really weird.
