What type of Ethernet cable should I use?

Hi mylotters! I signed a broadband plan about a year ago and it promised me 10mbps. I just wanted to ask if I would be able to use a cat6 Ethernet cable because my friend told me that it was pointless using a cat6 cable considering the fact that I have a broad band speed of only 10mbps. So I was just wondering if what he said was true as I am plannng to buy a cat6 Ethernet cable. Please help and I'm so sorry for being an internet n o o b.
