Any idea what I can do to use my computer again?

My old computer is an HP with a XP Pro service pack 3 operating system. When I got my new computer, I moved the old one to the other house to make it easier to work when I'm there. About two months ago, I could no longer use the wrieless mouse and key board, which I had purchased as a set about three years ago. I had never had a problem with them. A friend tried to help me trouble shoot the situation, and we were able to get the mouse working again, but not the keyboard. We changed the batteries in the keyboard, but it still wouldn't work. Since I can't shut the computer down properly without using the keyboard, I havent' turned it off in all this time or put it into hibernation. I finally went out and got a new keyboard that's wired, and it won't work either. It seemed to at first, but would not allow me to hibernate the computer. Now it won't do anything. Without a working keyboard, I can't download drivers or anything else. I have to keep the computer on, because otherwise my wireless network won't work for my laptop. Any advice?

Are you getting a message on the screen and a beep from the BIOS saying that a keyboard error has been detected when you turn your computer on ? If yes, it is probably a motherboard problem and your computer did its time... If no, the best to do is to reinstall XP. If it is not possible, you should want to download an ISO image of a Linux boot CD to see if your keyboard works with it.

I don't understand why you can't put the computer in hibernation with your mouse. It's been awhile since I used XP, but I think you should be able to do that somehow.
Also, if the mouse works you should be able to get to the Device Manager. If you can, check to see that the keyboard hasn't been turned off.

I had the same problem with my keyboard, and what I had to do is, take it to the 'Geek Squad', and they fixed it, right on the spot, he said he had to re-set the bios, because the usb connection quit working, after that it worked fine ~!

Guess I'll do that as a last resort if nothing else works. I wasn't able to visit my sick computer last night because my husband did the errands yesterday and today. I will have try all the suggestions that I've been given tomorrow.
