To employers or HR People, what do you feel when you need to fire or retrench some staff?

Yes I have done HR duties for years and responsible for hiring and firing. As difficult as it may be sometimes these measures must be done. I try not to be emotionally involved when doing so, but admit that I am human and it is not a good feeling. I do point out the reasoning for why the employee is being let go.
Here in the US it is very important to have a paper trail and or records listing the reason behind any employee being fired.
It is not a good feeling to fire someone but when they are not working out it somehow does make sense to let them go, especially if it is an employee who does not care too much for their position and or their co-workers with their actions.
I did get sad from time to time, but again depending on the reason for the firing.

Indeed as an employee the HR person is expected to maintain an organization, so our own jobs can be on the line if one does not maintain the order. Because my humanity always came in first I have gone as far as recommending agencies where they could seek for work.

I am not in HR but I am part of management in a small company. Yesterday I had a meeting with the owners of the company and some supervisors, and we decided that we are letting one person go. We're just letting this long weekend pass, and we'll let him go next week.
It doesn't feel good seeing him around at work and knowing that he'll soon be gone, but I also know that the company will be much better if we didn't carry around somebody who does not contribute productively to the company.
