my former nursing classmates are now going to be doctors

this is a continuation of my previous discussion which tackled about the news of nurses being asked by the hospitals to pay so that they can volunteer and have clinical experience. Last week, when i visited Dumaguete City, i found out that most of my classmates were now studying medicine. there are a lot of them. some are in their 3rd year, some on their 1st year. this is all because there is already a lot of nurses and no opportunities here in our country. maybe in the future there will be influx of doctors too. some people i know are doctors here in the Philippines and when they go abroad they become nurses there.

personally, i would view this development as something good and favorable. doctors can always practice their profession anywhere they go. wherever one may go, there will always be people who will need the doctor's help. thus, i have the perception that the need for doctors all over the world shall always be high. i would take it to be something that is worth looking forward to that nurses strive to take further studies so they can be doctors just as well. as for doctors who are serving as nurses abroad, i gathered that they are serving as nurses who assist doctors in the operating room or as doctor/s assistants. this is a job which accordingly, requires a person who has a good knowledge in the medical field. thus, this is a fitting job for a doctor in so many ways.

That is not always the case. A doctor who graduated in a medical school in the Philippines doesn't mean he'll be considered a doctor in the US. That is why there are doctors who turn out as nurses because at least a nurse in the Philippines can still work as a nurse in the US as long as you certain tests are passed and requirements are met and it's much cheaper to take up nursing in the Philippines compared to enrolling in a medical school in the US.

yes, taking up nursing here is kind of cheap because there are a lot of school that offers nursing courses or midwifery courses. i also think that in the US it is really hard to study college or whatever course there because it is expensive.

I guess this is the only way they can really make use of their Nursing courses. I mean, let's face it, there are limited job offering for Nurses here and abroad. Unlike before when the demand was high, nowadays, everyboyd is in it for the promise of big money. I hope that all of our Nurses would be able to at least go abroad to save then come back and serve the country.

i like your wish. yes, nurses are only going abroad so that they can have a hgher salary and most of them want to just stay in the country if they have a lot of savings already.i will also do it like that. i dont want to be away from my family because that would be pretty lonely.

My friends have realized this as well and have taken the same steps. I still admire them for taking all these steps and going all through these.

i admire them too because they dont stop looking for ways to be in service to the people and at the same time have continuing education. our country needs more doctors so that health care will be accessible to all but then it is also a reality that salary here is very low than abroad.

Yes, I heard of it that a lot of nurses now are taking up medicine and my niece is one of them. I can say, "good for them,if they have the money why not, right?". We all know that being a doctor is far better in earning money than being a nurse if we are here in the Philippines. So I am glad they are making their own way out of this problem in nursing unemployment. Cheers!

right! if they have the money and the resources and the perseverance, then go ahead. there are a lot of doctors but then there are few of them in the provinces and the far flung areas where we need them the most.

What this country needs at this time are doctors and not nurses. The problem is becoming a doctor is not cheap. It would be good if after they become doctors they'll stay and serve their countrymen and not just gain enough experience and then leave the country too in pursuit of the greenback. But I guess they can do whatever they can and it's their choice to make. There's nothing wrong if those doctors go abroad to work as doctors but if those doctors go abroad to work as nurses then there's something terribly wrong.

i think we dont need more nurses anymore. i think preferably more doctors. yes, going to medical school is very expensive, books and materials and tuition is the bulk of the expense. but of course, most of the doctors to be would want to have the return of their investment so they will be going abroad to work. I just hope some would also stay at the barrios to help people in the community.

i am a nurse too, and i find it's quite difficult to find a decent paying job for nurses...I plan on going back to school next year, i'll be taking up medicine too...

Good thing that is not my forte and nobody forces me to take that course since that is one of the most important course that you have to take it seriously especially it is about the life of the human. You will not only think on how to earn but the willingness must be coming from the person itself. This is a very long term to study and in my opinion I do really think that this is recommended for those people who are academically intelligent and hardworking at the same time that is serious in studies so that it could be easier for them on how to take care of human's body and analyze whenever there will be an operation.

you are correct. if one does not like to study medicine or nursing i think they will not be able to succeed all the school projects and exams because it is very difficult and has a lot of things to memorize!

Then this becomes a solid proof contrary to the claim that there is demand for nurses abroad. When this situation was at its peak, a lot have enrolled and took up this course. Nothing is wrong with this decision. However, many have failed to consider the fact that everything can change at will anytime. Whatever is in demand today cannot be in demand the next day, months, or years.

yeah, that's very true. Some of my classmates too are taking medicine. They said nursing is only their preparatory course in medicine.
