Trying to get a refund from American Airlines

I booked a round trip ticket on American Airlines. I charged it to Discover. I had to cancel the return flight because my plans have changed but I have kept the flight going. I did buy a refundable ticket. I made the changes a few days ago. My Discover Card has not been credited for the cancellation of my return flight. I called Discover and they told me that I have to allow 15 days for the merchant to credit my account and then I can open a dispute. Of course, I first have to call American Airlines and talk to them. I also assume that when Discover told me 15 days, they meant 15 business days. Have any mylotters dealt with an issue like this? Did you book an airline flight and then have to cancel all or a part of it? or make revisions? How long did it take before your credit card was credited with the refund? Anyone have to do this with American Airlines?

The issue with refunds is usually hidden in the small print. They may have written a few clauses in the contract that would make getting the refund more of a hassle than it should necessary be. But I am confident they would refund you for the trip you intend to cancel but it may take a little longer than you would expect it to take. This is from some experience I and some colleagues have had.

I am kicking myself because I never buy a round trip ticket. I like to leave my return trip open just in case something changes. I am assuming that I will eventually get my refund but that it is going to be a hassle. It is so hard to get through when trying to call the airlines. And I can not find an email. Thanks for your feedback.

I guess it is one of those little mistakes we make very rarely. I have realised some of these companies hide their emails very well and the only/best way to get them is on the phone. Better still, you could walk in to one of there offices or branches and speak to them in person. Wishing you all the best.

Good news. I just got an email from Discover Card that American Airlines had sent in a refund. I am so relieved. Now I don't have to deal with it this week. It makes me feel good about both American Airlines and Discover Card. One more less thing to worry about.

I have heard of airlines that will not refund your ticket if you use part of it but not all of it. They claim that they had to reserve a seat for you and they woulod lose money if they can't fill it. it used to be that you could reserve a ticket and not show and get your money back after the fact. Some consumers abused the system and now we all pay. When I was in college there were students who would book several different names and then those people would be no shows and not charged for the ticker. The college student could then fly stand by (usually at 1/2 price) and know that there were about 5 seats on different airlines that would be no shows thus increasing their chances of catching a flight. Such tactics were not limited to college students. Some business people would book several flights for the same day in case the meeting got out early or ran late. This practice lead the airlines to over book flights just to make sure they were full. They also started to require payment up front and it became harder to get a refund. Sometimes we do it to our selves and the actions of a few hurt us all.

I did get my refund from American Airlines with no problem and it took only a few days. But traveling has become very complicated and less fun. I don't pretend to know all the reasons why. I just know that it has. And from what I hear, the airlines are making huge profits.
