I saw a discussion on soup the other day and it reminded me of a conversation that I had with a friend on soup. I had mentioned now that fall is here its soup time. Season getting colder and darker, harvest root veggies coming out of the ground... It's Soup Time! The good stuff in Life! And to my horror and dismay my friend said "my kids don't like home made soup!" I blinked a few times and my mind slowly wrapped around this concept and my mouth spat out "What do you mean your kids don't like home made soup???" Now soup is good in so many ways, especially home made soup, there is the control of sodium (Statistics Canada recommended sodium intake -daily in take for a child 4-8 is 1200 mg and for adults its 1500 mg) people in general exceed the limit by more the double. Check out the sodium on a can of store bought soup and you can almost hear your arteries harden... Fresh veggies taste so good, the way the flavours mingle during cooking and the delious smell that warms the home. Soup is always fun in our home, we add our favorite veggies, normal talk involves the hard choices of rice, potatoes or noodles. Serious thought goes to that, trust me! Green beans is a given, due to the Princess who loves green beans. Carrots for me! Chicken, turkey or beef! Kids love fish crackers, I like seasoned flat bread with seeds or fresh butter bread. Yum! Soup is easy and simple to make, boil water and add your favorite ingredients... with in 40 minutes you got soup! And soup always taste good reheated :) I think I will test the theory and invite my friend over with her kids to for soup! Who can resist the delious smells of home made soup!

I think I'd do that, too. Homemade soup can be made so many different ways, too, depending on the vegetables you have on hand. I like to make broccoli, greens and cheese soup or potato and onion soup, although I still like potato, carrot, onions, etc., in soup. Now I'm hungry!

my sister makes a wicked potatoe bacon soup, its so rich and creamy. I make a delicious ham chowder, I am tempted to try to make my sister's recipe but I'd rather eat hers.

It's 6 AM and you've made me hungry for potato soup! That just may be on the menu today. I like to make it with tuna and then I put a can of evaporated milk in it; that's the only time I like evaporated milk. It's so good!

I have never put evaporated milk into soup before, I bet it would be creamy and rich. Now for potatoe soup with evaporated milk, that definitely bears some thought. I will have to begin working with this idea. I like to make from scratch so there is always trial and error happening... never have had to toss anything out yet lol

Hi, Amfrye. Welcome to myLot! I love hot soup too. My kids also love it as well. But this year, I plan to make homemade soup for this winter. I don't like indulging in a soup that is salty. I would like to eat soup that has a lower sodium intake. My kids love soup and I love it too. I am going to make me a soup this year because I have always wanted to try preparing it.

Thanks for the Welcome! Yes soup is good and its easy to make. I don't think there is an easier meal to make and when you use hardy vegetables it make so much sense. Its also very cheap on the pocket book too , and it goes a long way. I think that the best part about home made soup is that it tastes great reheated the next day!

I don't think that I could get through the winter months without a virtual constant supply of my home made soups and broths. I make big pots of pea and ham soup, Scotch broth, chicken and leek, vegetable - whatever I have in the house. Making soups is a great way of using leftovers and means that you can make healthy, filling and tasty meals without having to spend a fortune!

Hi Oldchem I am not familiar with Scotch broth, mind telling me what it is? Your right about the leftovers, its one way to get them out of the fridge! I will use mashed potatoes as thickener instead of flour or cornstarch. There is so many ways to make tasty soup with leftovers!

I make a mean beef vegetable soup, and chili also. I also love to make homemade chicken noodle soup. I love it with fresh baked bread too. Its starting to get a little cooler. When it does the soup pan will come out!

I love chilli, I add corn to mine. My good friend mentioned eating the chili with corn chips and I went "hey tastey idea". I like chilli spicey but not so hot that I need a gallon of water! I am not to sure about mushrooms in it yet, its one of those see saw ingredients. I am kinda stuck on bread with soup and chilli. I really just like sopping food up with a peice of bread... not gravey just soap and chilli and well home made apricot jam!
