A mentally challenged lady in our country went into hospital to have a baby. Obviously she was not being monitored and the staff knew she had mental problems. She went into the nursery and was later found by a nurse to be breast feeding another women's baby. She herself gave birth one hour later.
This is such a tragedy that should have been prevented but it happened. The mother of the baby is receiving couselling and the baby is being kept in hospital and receiving the HIV drug - I forget the name.
Can you imagine how the mother of the baby feels? She has just given birth to her baby and another women who is HIV positive was found breast feeding the baby?
I am praying that this baby will not show any symptoms of HIV. How do you think you would have reacted to this if it had been your baby?

Wow, that would be scary, I can't imagine the mother of the baby and how she is dealing with this..I know in America, that would be unusual that anyone other than personal, can get to the babies. I am sorry that woman in your country have this opening that someone can walk in like that..Do you have many babies stolen because of this lack of security? That is scary..

They sell them to other people that want babies and it not just others walking in taking them. When my baby boy was taken it was a doctor and a few nurses that were to blame. The doctor, one nurse, and the lawyer helping set it all up finding the "parents" all went to jail but the babies were never returned as they hid the records and no one found them and they would not tell where the babies were. I think about my son all the time.

@Cythiann, I am sorry, I have heard some stories how children disappear in other countries, and though America also has this problem, it is nothing compared to what you go through..
Oh moondancer, how sad, I am so so sorry..I can't imagine how it must feel,it brings tears to my eyes just thinking about what you go through every day..I know it isn't much, but I am using all my emotes just for you..

No, we do not have babies stolen at birth. I cannot think of any case but our missing children numbers has risen to the highest level ever. 236 children missing from as young as 5 or 6 to 14 or 15. It must be human trafficking and it is both little boys and little girls. I just wish they could find these animals and deal with them.
Remember the ladies who give birth at government hospitals are usually in a lower socio economic group and they really do not want to steal anyone's baby as they have enough of their own to care for.
Although for major medical I would go to a government hospital as their doctors are more experienced and they have better equipment.

I think in this case as is already realised in the initial stage or immediately after the feeding, the preventive measures and appropriate medicines in time can bring the baby out of danger. However, the doctors and the hospital authorities have to go through a clean examination of the baby to prove it.
It is quite unexpected and no one can think of such an unfortunate scene in any manner. It is everyone's duty to take care of ourself and be cautious of such things happening. Many such incidents are happening around due carelessness and absentmindedness. Also, the hospital staff and person on duty should be much careful for the incidents like this.

We have had children and others dying from negligence. It appears as if you only have money then you can get good medical attention

Everybody's financial background is not the same and that is the reason why our government need to take care of the average or poor people. Those who have money and wealth will get all kind of attention in all ways and those who suffer will be a sufferer for their whole life.
The government running hospitals and such institutions must be taken care in an efficient manner and should be monitored properly. Here in our country also, recently come to know that the medicine supplied to the hospitals are diverted to private medical shops and the management and the doctors and the people involved are making a huge profits and the poor patients in the hospitals are suffering and dying. Whatever happens, the loser is always the poor people only.
Thank-s

I would be livid! I would think that hospital can expect a huge law suit for the hospital neglecting the safety of her child while in their care in the nursery and expect some expensive damages if the child ever contracts the disease.
On a side note if I am recalling correctly wasn't there a scene in the movie The Hand that Rocks the Cradle where the woman became a nanny after loosing her own baby and started nursing the child she was to care for. EWWWWW....

It is a government hospital in a third world country and she would wait many years for anything. They should provide all medication etc. The whole family needs help and support. Yes, I do believe that you are right about the movie. I am really upset about this and keep thinking of the baby - just born into the world and dealt this blow. I am so angry about it all

How would I have handled it? I probably would have went on a killing rampage! Killed the woman who was HIV+, then killed the staff responsible for the patient, and the staff responsible for watching the newborns to ensure crazy people don't go near them. There are so many people at fault here. 1. someone should have been monitoring the crazy lady, 2. someone should have been protecting the newborns, 3. Each time I had a child the child never left my sight until we left the hospital.. so why was the baby not with mom? Not saying mom is to be blamed.. but why was the child in the nursery and not with her.. just curious.

The baby was newborn and they are not left with their mother immediately. The mothers are on wards not in separate rooms. No the mother is not to blame - she just followed the archaic hospital instructions. If she was in a private hospital then the baby would have been with her.
I think that I would have lost it completely - they would have had to sedate me. I could not cope.

I would be so upset. If my child ended up with HIV, I would sue the hospital for allowing that to happen. Our hospital where I live, you cannot go into the nursery, they keep the door locked and the nurses bring you the baby whose number on their bracelet matchen the number on the mother's bracelet so I wouldn't think that this could happen here. If it did, I would sue.

The mother really cannot sue a bankrupt government. It is a government hospital so it would take many years if ever before she got paid. There was a security guard at the door but he let her in and this is against their orders. It is so horrible. I am hoping that the government will pay for all medication as it is the least that they can do.

This is certainly a something that never should have happened. There have been many times I've been to the nursery in hospitals and for long periods of time no one not one nurse came in to check on the babies. I know they have other things to do but these are newborn babies anything could happen. Plus the fact they are someone else's babies and they are responsible for them. It should be set in stone that at all times one nurse is left with the babies to watch over them. It doesn't matter if it's one or many babies.
I don't know what I'd do if this was my baby. I know I'd do a lot of praying! That is for sure. As for the hospital and staff, they would certainly here from me and if my child did get anything from that woman they would be footing the bills for eternity. That's the least they could do. Anything my child needed medically they would have to provide. That is for sure.
Bless that baby and the mom and father. I feel for them and I will pray so hatd for the baby to be free of illness.

That is so wonderful. Many lawyers would not give their time that way, but some do. Bless him for doing that for this couple and the baby. Bless that baby Lord for you always take care of the children for they are innocent.

I am praying too. I do hope that the baby is not carrying the virus One good thing is that a very prominent lawyer is going to represent the parents free. The security was lax and the mentally challenged lady should have been isolated. Blessings my friend

gosh here in America our nurseries are so guarded a new doctor was turned away until he could prove he was the doctor of one of the newborn. I know because I worked there for awhile and was given an id badge so I could help tend the babies. they are every careful here in the US and I am so glad they are too.Poor security and of all things in a maternity hospital that's just unforgivable to me.I hope that baby does not show any signs of HIV. poor baby and poor mom.

OMG! That poor mother and child. I really hope that the woman's milk had not come in yet and the baby did not contact HIV from this mentally ill woman.
I would be a mess if that were to happen to me. I would be livid, but I would also be heartbroken at the same time.

second time lost all my response grrrrr. I think I would be so scared and so angry that they let that women get to my baby then I would pray that God would keep her from getting HIV and hope my
baby would not get the virus. How could they have let an HiV patient into the nursery like that? usually you cannot jusgt walk into a hospital nursery that easily.that baby's poor mom how torn up she must be and hoping so much that her baby will be spared. thats ju st so bad of the hospital personnel not to keep tabs on that HIV patient.

I hate it when I lose a response and I did it twice today. The security guard let her in as she said that she just wanted to look at the babies
Once person who posted to me today told of how her baby was stolen from the hospital and sold. the people were caught but they never told who the baby was sold to. My heart hurts for her so much.
A lawyer is suing on behalf of the family and he is doing it free. But I pray to God that the baby will be all right

OMGOSH, This is horrible. I hope & pray this baby will be alright. I am afraid i would have shown my patootie over this altho the damage was already done. Somebody was not doing their job in that nursery to have let her get to someone else's baby , period.

My goodness, how could the hospital be so negligent and careless! Why aren't they guarding and securing the nursery? How could that HIV positive women enter the place just like that? The poor baby has been a victim of gross negligence of the hospital staff. I think they should pay the price. The mother of the baby should sue them. And that HIV and mentally-ill woman should be held and kept where she should be.

I can only imagine how that would feel...My goodness what a horrible ordeal for the baby and his mother! It’s interesting that the mentally challenged woman already had milk and she had not given birth yet...Regardless, I pray that this poor baby will be okay and not infected with HIV. Such situations one can only imagine the feelings one would experience. Very sad...

The mentally challenged woman was not being monitored. She went to the nursery and asked the guard to let her see the babies and as she was heavily pregnant he did not suspect anything. Of course they are now 'taking measures so this will not happen again'

Hi Cynthiann,
What a horrible story! I don't know how I'd react but it wouldn't be pretty, I'm sure. I don't understand how she even got to a baby that wasn't hers. The hospital staff must have really been out to lunch. Here, it would be next to impossible to even touch another woman's baby and certainly not get all comfy and start nursing it. They have a pretty solid security here and the nursery is monitored at all times. A mom can't even just go in and get her own baby. The nurse has to be called and she will bring the baby in to the mother. Hopefully, the baby will be alright. You'll have to keep us updated.

Hi ya Cynth
That really is a sad sad story and I really hope that the baby is fine. I really have no idea how I would react I really don't. I think unless you are in that situation you have no idea what it is like. I can only think that I would go through many emmotions, anger, sadness, hopelessness, dread, fear, hatred, pity and oh how the list I am sure would go on!

So do we. Of course NOW they have decided to put in security cameras etc. They wait until something happens. A lawyer is suing the government on behalf of the parents and child free so maybe there will be help down the road.

Oh my how devastating this has to be for the new born baby's parents. While I understand the woman is challenged the hospital did not do a good job at monitoring her. I can also understand that they are human, but not sure the humanity will refrain from my absolute anger that I would be feeling had it been my baby.
I hope the hospital can see this as an eye opener that they need to have more staff especially so that situations like this do not ever occur again. In the meantime, my prayers for the baby and family, this truly is very devastating.

The hospital did sweet Fanny Adams to keep the deranged woman in isolation and they are to blame. Total negligence as they knew that she had a mental problem. It is sickening

It was an accident and it is going to be a very bad accident if the baby gets the AIDS from her. It sounds like a film story to me. How can be someone so careless.
It is a rare case and very tragic one.

A Security Guard let her into the nursery as she was obviously pregnant and told him she just wanted to look at the new babies
It is suspected that she was already nursing another child so her milk was well established. Just slipped through the nets.
