Pyrography/Wood Burning Question

I don't think many of you will know the answer to this, but I thought I would ask anyway in case someone did know. My question is: Can you do pyrography/wood burning on painted wood as long as you wear a mask? I know that burning wood that has been stained, painted, or otherwise treated can release toxic fumes. And that you should only do wood burning on plain/untreated wood. But, do you think I would be okay if I wore perhaps a painting mask and some safety glasses? I have a spice rack that was painted, and I was unable to remove all the paint by sanding it. So, I decided just to put a fresh coat of paint in a different color. And now I would like to do some pyrography/wood burning on it.

what's the painted wood for? is this like a design or to look nice? or some form of art or something?
