Hi Mylotters! Here's my situation, or my cat's situation... He's only 4 months old and we give him ourr food... The food that lefts. We already tried to give him cat food but he didn't liked it. The problem is that he have a really stinky breath. I mean, it's really bad. For some time it got better, but now he's again with a horrible breath. I don't know if it's a good idea to take a mini toothbrush a wash his teeth. Me and my sister already tried that but he doesn't like so we stopped. Does it already happened to your cat? It's a problem or it's easy to fix? And how can I make his breath smell better at least? :/

whatever you do, do NOT feed him anything with onions or garlic, even cooked with/in, those could make him sick or die! The BEST thing is to hold out and get him eating cat food - a good quality cat food might be more interesting to him, don't buy him store brand junk... But since you've already broken down and are feeding him people food, it might be hard, but I have a few that like to chew brush bristles and broom straws, those act rather like dental floss and might help...

Does onions and garlic can really kill a cat? I didn't know that.

And dogs, onions are worse, but garlic is related... and it destroys the liver

Maybe you should take him to a vet who knows there could be something wrong

This is true. Sometimes bad breath is a sign of a deeper problem.. definitely talk to a vet!

Cat - Pet Cat
Well I really could not believe there is a master like you that even cares for the breath of his cat. How nice! Well I am not a cat keeper so I really would not know. But I think if this issue really bothers you then better consult a vet on this issue or learn from others here who keep cats. Experience is always the best teacher actually.

Just a guess but I think his bad breath comes from his diet not from his teeth. You need to remember that cats are meat eaters and should eat very few vegatables. Keep trying good quality cat food and if you are worried about his teeth give him dry food to chew. Changing a cat's habits can be a slow process to hang in there. Go on the Internet for other suggestions.

First of all, foul breath is an indication of tooth decay. A vet must handle that. Secondly, cats teeth are not brushed. Instead, there is a special type of toothpaste which you put on your finger and allow the cat to lick. It is poultry flavored. While your cat is eating it, it cleans the teeth and freshens the breath. Then, she just swallows it.

I have never heard of the need for cats (or dogs) to have their teeth brushed.

The occasional human food as a treat, provided it does not contain foods that are bad for cats, is okay. Really it is better to have proper cat with food ingredients he needs. If he gets the habit of only eating human foods, it wil be hard to break. SDry food or tin food is okay. His breath shouldn't smell that bad at his age. Usually bad breath is a sign of dental decay, which definitely shouldn't be happening to a kitten. Cleaning his teeth with a cat toothbrush is too difficult. There are products one can buy tha thelp clean cats teeth. Greenies are iscellent. Theri is also a liquid one can put in their drinnking water. But basicly at his age, he teeth should be good and he should be eating cat food. His if bad breath doesn't resolve soon, and he wont eat good cat, you will need to take him to a vet.

First thing to do is to stop giving him people food and put cat food out and when he gets hungry he will start eating the cat food because he will be hungry and will need something to eat and i do this with my dog because he needs the nutrients that are in the dog food and he needs whats in the dog good. Its the same with cat food as well. Now many vets will put a animal to sleep and brush there teeth of course it might be expensive too but you can also call some groomers too as well because i know my dogs groomer will bursh teeth and i have had my dogs teeth brushed but of course i dont know how old the animal needs to be. You can also get a toothbrush that is for cats and dogs and try that again and goodluck with it. I have done this with my dog and i have to keep up with it because his breath is pretty bad at times too.

Stinky breath could be a sign of a problem inside your cat's system. Maybe you should have your cat checked to a veterinarian. But before you do that try to avoid feeding the cat with lots of protein or meat. Try to minimize it. Stinky breath can sometimes be a product of protein ingestion. If the problem doesn't resolve then take your cat to the vet. Give us update. Goodluck. shadow41

I think your cat needs to see a dentist. Maybe he needs oral prophylaxis and may some pasta. If that doesn't work, maybe the cat have intestinal or digestive problems. Like in humans, if we have bad breath there are deeper concerns in our health. See your vet.
