Hello fellow Mylotters. I heard on the news today about an organization in Detroit that has served 45,000 children! That is 45,000 homeless or neglected children within a 10 year span. The organization is Covenant House, and they house and feed the homeless. I started to cry when I heard them speaking about this organization and how many children have passed through already. In just 10 years, in one area of the United States. It broke my heart. That many neglected, abused and/or homeless children. Lord, have mercy. I will find a way to get some money together to donate to them.
What would you do if you heard about something like this? Do you think this is just terrible that many children have been in such dire straights in such a short time?

That is really a high number and truly amazing that there is a house for them to survive at and live at since there parents dont want anything to do with them. Some parents just dont seem to care and have kids for all the wrong reasons and its crazy to see kids on the streets by them selves and you do feel bad for them. Im glad there are some great people out there in the world that are giving back to these kids and offering them a place to live and eat at and possibly have some schooling in life too. Its really sad and i cant believe its such a high number and i would have never thought that. If i had enough money myself i would be donating money to them but having to struggle myself isnt easy but working is a good thing in life and i hope they can all live a happy life too.

That is sad to hear so many children have gone through there in the past 10 years but also great that there is an organisation out there helping people of all ages. I do know that Detroit does have a bad side (the other side of 8 Mile)...Detroit's bad area is sounding worse than the bad side of LA...

Ya, Southwest Detroit doesn't sound so bad anymore. lol. That used to be the worst side of Detroit. Now it seems it is getting cleaned up. I am amazed to drive through Southwest and see homes that are well maintained, flowers and other plants in the yard to make it nice. I remember a year ago driving down a busy street and seeing nicely painted or even newly sided homes with flowers and what not, and thinking it does not look like Detroit at all! It looked like a safe little neighborhood you could raise your children in. Way to go Southwest residents, and keep up the good work.

That's great to hear! I'm in Australia but a BIG fan of Eminem & you can see Warren in his movie 8 mile & how bad it is/was there...I am happy to hear that it is starting to come up & looking a little more safe.

This is too bad. It's awful. I do think that part of it is that Detroit in particular was hit very hard by the recession. A lot of jobs were lost there. Those poor children.

Yes, Covenant House has been around for a while and granted they do a good thing. I get letters from them each year or more wanting money. I don't give except through United Way. That way I know how much is going to help the children and how much is going to feed the fat cats running the place. Some of them places use 10 of the dollar to feed the children and 90 cents to the CEO of the charity.

There are several organizations that give a high percentage to the cause the donations are meant for. Salvation Army, St. Vincent DePaul just to name a few more. It is a great point that you make, because many people do not know this information. It is good to advertize for the organizations that do give a high percentage of the funds towards the cause, and also let people be aware of those who keep a high portion for operating costs.

charitywatch.org checks out charities a few times a year. Some charities may not be listed however.

It is a pity so many children and adults suffering. Yes, there are organizations which are helping homeless people. At times, there are people out there along the streets right in the winter cold. When I come across fund-raising programs of those organization, I make donations to them.

Research the organizations you want to send money to. You want to be sure the money will go to the cause you support rather than into someone's personal coffer.
