I have heard that dot.tk was not very secure for internet surfers, do you think that using dot.tk runs a risk of wasting your time and your visitors time as a webmaster?

It's a great service, because unlike other free services of this nature, it offers a TLD (top level domain) and not a subdomain like "co.cc","co.tv" and others. However, it has a flaw - it requires you to have at least 25 visitors every 3 months and if you're setting up a personal website, available to only a limited number of people, Dot.TK might not be the best option. That's why I use FreeDNS's shared registry of subdomains (http://freedns.afraid.org/). It has great subdomains such as "us.to","uk.to" and many, many, MANY others.
