What is your country's "9-11"?

I got some interesting responses to a post I wrote about the terrorist attacks in the United States on 11 Sep 01. They came from people of other countries, talking about how their own countries press covers the anniversaries of those attacks, but the US doesn't cover much (if anything) about tragedies, attacks and other man made disasters around the world. So, here's your change to let it be known. Be the press for your own nation. Tell me about your country's "9-11". Be as detailed as you want. Tell your story... including where you were and what you were doing when it happened.

I am from Philippines. And we have our 9-11 almost everyday. It's like my country is stuck in a mud. Never go up. While our other Asian neighbor countries are developing fast, Philippines is going down the hole. The unemployment rate is ridiculous that most of my fellow countrymen are all wanting to work overseas.

Well, I was thinking more in terms of terrorism and other man caused disasters... I know the Southern islands of The Philippines are bad that way. I have a son who spent two years on Leyte as a missionary. White Missionaries aren't even allowed in the islands south of there.

The most critical place in the Philippines is located in some areas in Mindanao. Like Zamboanga and other places being run by terrorists (ABU SAYAFF and MILF). So tourists should avoid those places. Leyte is literally safe for tourists. So your son is safe. Leyte is no problem. There are some part though in Samar Island (a neighboring island of leyte) that houses the terrorists like the National Peoples Army. But the situation is not a critical than in some parts of Mindanao. A country doesn't have to hit by a terrorism to have major problems. In my country Philippines, we have been in the mud for hundred of years. We houses probably the most corrupt public officials than anyone can imagine.

Well, I can think of few .. 23 august 1944. King Mihai I-st (in his name, while he was barely 18-19 y) and part of romanian politicians were in the middle of negotiations of "cease fire, we push out germans and declare neutrality - russians would not come to us. Negotiations were secret and started some time a go. But russains somehow find out, found some fans at high level in our government and quickly organised the military strike against germans and state leaders, supported by red army tanks .. So we were left under Stalin influence area and our next 45 years we were pulled back on all - culture, education, freedom. // 12/(21-22)/1989. So called revolution. In fact the spark of all started in december 16 in another town and was a setup which run out of control. Few days later, the real organisers tried to bring thing back on their control starting to flame things in Bucharest, then again things didn't worked as plan .. So, what should have been a "population riot against communist dictature", was proved to be a "coup d'etat" which involved several secret services and lot of members of communist party "second line" and secret services leaders. // What this 2 events and 9/11 USA have in common? All 3 were a typical communist style actions: some top leaders, not necessary the highest, with tons of financial and intelligence (secret services) support, set up some events which to lead to what they have purposed them self to accomplish. Another common elements: the lack of real news in first moments; military, army not involved and actually forced to stay away until is to late; rumors of all kind soon after all started; as soon as event have been done, finger pointed to selected target (long time chose to be crippled but a justification was required).

I was watching Sesame Street on PBS with my grandson when it happened. I would not have known about it until much later had my mother not called me and told me to turn on the news...that something horrible was taking place. She was clearly in panick mode. This was not unusual for her but something in her voice told me that this was different. I switched on the news and was shocked at what I was hearing and seeing. My grandson was 3 and started screaming so I switched back to PBS which did not get interupted at all. When his show was over, I settled him down with playing with his trucks and switched the channel back to the news. Again, he started screaming as soon as they showed the images. I ended up, putting some music on for him on the computer and taking my radio into the kitchen to listen to the broadcasts. He is older now and he still remembers that day. He does not remember the images or just what scared him but he remembers being terrified.

I am from Canada, and it seems there has been very little major incidents that occurred here. I believe it is due to the different race and cultures that reside in Canada that other countries cannot really hate them as they may have family members here etc. From what I know when terrorist attacks occur in Canada, it is usually at a different country's embassy and was done by someone part of that country's nation. There were some Quebec Nationalism attacks by groups who want Quebec to be a separate nation but I cannot really speak in detail. But overall I think we have more riot related incidents which occur in Canada more often than direct nation terrorism. Riots here are not as violent in the middle east, but is still violent, and sometimes very stupid related like the Vancouver hockey riot recently.
