Born from English Country, Something to be Proud of

Philippines

I just want to hear what people feels who have grown and are living in English country about being "super" and really familiar with English language. I think you are very lucky because since the day you were born you are already learning your language and all of you are very good of it. Unlike people like me who came from non-English country, we are trying our best to unleashed expertise on it so we keep on learning English. Though sometimes it was complicated, still it was fun and exciting.

The reason that the English has become to be a global language is because these countries are usually developed. And therefore people want to learn from these advanced countries and the language is necessary. You are right that it is proud to be born in an English country. So that you don't have to spend long time learning English. Here we have to learn English since primary school until university. Even if your major is painting in the university, but you still have to learn English. And you must pass the English exams so that you can go to the university. You can see how important the English is. I love China

Yes, you are right. Here also in Philippines, we have a separate field or subject for English and it was taught from Preparatory School up to Universities. Some schools also required their student to speak in English while they are inside the school campus.

Though born in an English-speaking nation/country, I became multi-lingual. I am more proud of my ability to communicate in several languages, especially the ability to simultaneously converse in multiple languages.

As one born and breed in the heart of the English Countryside I can say it is both an advantage and an disadvantage. English, as I am sue you know is the universal language, which means most places I have travelled in the world I can make myself understood in one way or another. English is a Germanic language but with a strong Latin influence and unlike German, for instance, has never been reluctant to import words from other languages. For this reason English vocabulary is immense. For instance I can say, "I am angry" "I am wrathful" "I am furious" "I am indignant, irate, ireful, etc." All these adjective are generally taken to be synonymous yet each has a different shade of meaning, lending English an unsuppressed range and subtlety of expression. A graduate of an English university may well have a personal vocabulary that exceeds the total vocabulary of some languages! There are also disadvantages, we find it hard to learn other languages, the ability to be understood in most places makes us lazy when it comes to learning the tongue of others. We have to listen to others mangling our language, and on occasion, I have been told by Americans that I am using my language incorrectly! Finally, we have to put up with the annoyance of having to listen to people trying to speak English on phone help lines the pronunciation of whom is appalling. Of particular problem is the mono-tonal pronunciation of Philippine nationals on help lines, that renders English, which is a tonal language, almost incomprehensible and sounds like a robot speaking. Having said that I have admiration for those foreigners that learn English. all the best urban

I think it is mostly only the Americans that use a deviant spelling, etc and I guess their colonies all the best urban

Well, im still proud even though im not from an english country. They might be well versed in speaking english coz its their first language but we don't know if they are using the correct grammar all the time. Just because we heard them fluent in english and are fast talker we get amazed and we just ignored their grammar coz of the fact that they are good. We, filipino's used english as our second language, i dunno nowadays if it remains on the second coz almost all schools here require student to speak in english. I believe we filipinos should be proud coz majority of us really know how to speak english well and put always into consideration the correct grammar. Sometimes, we mocked at our natives who uses wrong grammar in speaking but when it comes to foreigners we understand them. I dont know if this is a good attitude or bad but it only shows filipinos are very conscious with the english language. I believe with the english skills we have we can compete globally!

You are right! And i just watched recently on one morning show that Filipino are good speaker and can be able to speak other language whether Chinese,Japanese , Spanish and any other language fluently because our tongue is flexible and can speak with the right intonation unlike others. You know what I mean, "yung mga di pinoy in general, pilipit sila magsalita at hirap na hirap, hehe, pero sa'tin.. sisiw lng yan!" Agree? Thanks!!! Have a great day ahead!

i do not think being able to speak the national language is a thing that a citizen should be proud of. i mean, one has to be proud of his identity with his language and everything in it. it is a given that a English national knows it from his birth. it is not something extraordinary, it is necessary. but to be able to learn the English language is a plus, just like a foreigner being able to learn to speak other languages, or even dialect. :-)

It is not necessary that one should be born in an English country to be good in English. It is one's right exposure that helps one learn the language.

Though it is good, everyone who exposes themselves to the rest of the world eventually learns English. Therefore I would prefer to be from somewhere else and learn English, as being bi-lingual or multi-lingual is a great skill and people will become envious. I say that I want to learn English as a second language instead of learning other languages with English as my first language because, it seems to me people can understand English or learn to speak it at least much faster than others trying to learn other languages. Generally all languages should be just as difficult to learn as another, but English being the "business" language it will catch on much faster in foreign countries. I mean question why, even though mandarin is the most spoken language in the world, English is still the preferred language for business. Quick response would be, its because mandarin is spoken by millions of people in china, and English is spoken by a lot of people outside of china. But think about it a little more. Cheers!

I am sure that it gives excitement to those who are trying to be good in English..the way they speak, and also to write.. Now,English is because easy and short cut to use ,and not like to other languages, there are many words to say and use..It is also world wide use that language, known, and also unique..
