If you did a crime, will you plead for insanity to get off the hook?

Say,you did something cruel, killed a person, etc... of course all evidence points at you, there is a witness, etc, and you know you will most definitely face the life sentence, or worst the death sentence...
will you want to plead for an insanity so you'd get off the jail time, and instead be sent to a private hospital? I mean, if you are rich, i am sure you can do this, have a lot of doctors "claim" you were not at your best at the time of the crime and they can send you to a nice private hospital....
will you do it, or not?

Yeah, i'd probably try to see if i could get away with it; it has often been said that my friends expect me to be committed at some point in my life so it wouldn't be too unbelievable either.
Of course now if anyone found this post it would probably damage my case :S

Exactly. i think many get away from what they did to others because they are capable of doing such things, through money and they themselves are able to live with the thought they have killed or has hurt someone tremendously.
its just sad that some people really are becoming heartless nowadays, its like they have lost their conscience.

Hi chiyosan!
I'm not sure what I would do if I killed somebody. I'm not even sure if I'm able to do something after killing a person. I probably wouldn't have to pretend that I'm crazy. I would probably go crazy after killing a person!
But for the sake of your discussion, if I'm still sane after killing a person, I don't think I would plea for insanity. I wouldn't want to be placed in a mental hospital along with other crazy people. But then again, I wouldn't want to go to prison, too. I guess I'll just kill myself.
Maybe I will go to prison instead, but I will request to be alone in one cell since I have the money. I will buy one cell for myself only.

first of, you will not get to be sentenced just like that.
you will be asked even before the trial starts if you are guilty or not of the crime being accused on you. this is called arraignment. at the arraignment, pleading guilty will make the possible sentence downgraded. i don't think there will be a plea to offer after the sentence is ordered and being served, but i am not quite so sure about this.

thank you for your response, you are correct, we ought to make sure that whatever we do, we have to be responsible and own up to it... though we may be scared... we do not know whatwill happen but we should gather up the courage and face the consequences of our actions

i think that rule applys to alot in life so many peoploe today do not know how to accept responsibility for what they do. Get fat sue mcdonalds. spill coffe sue. Become broke blame everything else. It is very depressing the world would be a much better place if people could just accept the mistakes they have made.

Surely will not plead for insanity. When I kill someone, it must have been quite a necessary act, because there's nothing of a killer in me. Someone must have really provoked me to act like this. So I gladly like to go to prison, for I would know I I was right.

Thank you godarna. you are brave.
I have always thought that prison is very scary place and lots of bad things could happen to you, emotionally and physically.
You are right though, you said it must be that someone has provoked you or that it is necessary... thanks for your sharing this with us! :D

If I committed an offense, then I would have had good reason for doing so: Some form of self-defense. And no, I would not plead insanity to get out off the hook. I am of the opinion that people who plead insanity are to be locked for life in a community, regardless of how sane they thereafter become.

No I don't think I could plead insanity because I firstly would have to live with the thought of having killed someone so that in itself would probably with time cause me to be unstable.
The other reason why not is that pleading insanity is a cop out so to speak and if one does the crime, one must pay for their actions.
These are all summations as I hope never to be in this type of predicament and while I would like to love free and not jailed, I don't know how a sane person can survive say in a mental institution.

It depends on the kind of crime (what is a crime/evil) I committed.
You can kill someone on purpose or planned it.
You can be dragged into a crime or choose for it.
I think that if I commit a crime from which I know in front it is a crime it's my choice. I would not plead for insanity because it was my choice. And if I choose to do it I have a very good reason for it. I also know what will happen if it doesn't go the way I planned it (I assume that is not to go to prison or so). So no I would not plead insanity I also don't think anyone will believe me if I would do so.

I think getting off the hook would do us an injustice. If we had a good reason for our crime whatever it might be then we just need to face the wrong we have done but if we have little or no reason then perhaps it is true that our act is insane. So, to answer the question I think depends on the person. I think some crimes are an act of insanity so if it was terrible I would go with the insanity plea because there is something wrong with me. However, if I did something like counter fitting, making money that is illegal currency and spent it on things that helped others pay their bills, create new jobs and even gave some of it to charity I would choose jail time because I am not delusional or suffering from insanity - I am just having a good time. Laughing here!

thank you for sharing this; it is of course what most people would want to happen.. but sometimes society provides those who have power so much option and they can easily get off the hook, pleading insanity, and all when it comes to situations like this.
