Are you allergic to any food? I have been having this problem.

In january of this year, I started having these episodes where my hands would start itching, then my back of my head, my ears, my legs, stomach entire body from one end to the other. I will get faint, get nauseated, break out in sweats, have back door trots, my head hurts, and the next morning my hands are swolen, once my feet also, another time my entire face was swolen for about 4 days. The last couple of time sit happened I went to the emergency room. I was back stabilized, but my hands were hurting and swolen and my face was swolen. They first told me I had cancer. WRONG!!!! It turned out to be an allergy. Now I have been trying to figure out what it is I am allergic to. The two times it happened this week, I had fried pork steak and tonight with it I had fried okra. So the only thing I had different was the pork steak both nights. Have you ever heard of someone being allergic to pork all of a sudden when they weren't the first 100 years of their life?

Hi befriendme. How the heck are you doing. I haven't heard from you in about 24 hours. Okay, I will definitely get all my salty foods together and send them flying over to you by airplane. How's that? Wonder how much that would cost me? Could you pay the freight? Freight's pretty high nowadays, I think. Which airline you want me to use. By the way, where are you? In the United States of America? Just kidding I don't think you are from the United States, or are you? All kidding aside, where are you from. I guess I am allowed to ask that. Am I?

I am just playing with you. Yes, that is me on the profile. I can see age on it big time. The picture is about a year old. It is the second one I have had there. I have aged big time in the last year from stress and grief and all. I think I look bad now. I think everyone is their own worst critic. My mom always looked so much younger than she was. So it is a generic thing, but it's catching up with me now. That's okay tho, cause I am growing old gracefully.

Oh im sorry for what happened to you, hope the allergic wont turn bad and can be cured. Im allergic to eggs and I avoid meats, so I only eat vegetables and fish, shrimps or sea products. but my allergic is not that bad, if I eat egg i would have itchy all over my body but not until i get faint or like what you had. I never know anyone allergic to pork in sudden, I cant help much but I really wish you wont have this kind of allergic anymore.

I appreciate you asking. Thanks so much. I have not had another reaction, and I have had no pork or no salt. I have some pork steak in the frige, but I kind feel funny when I look at it, like do you want to go through that tonight and see if it is the pork. So I just look for something else. That is good that it isn't everything that has eggs in it. Yeah, they don't put fried eggs in the ingredients. LOL. Chillies? Is that peppers or is it a chilli seasoning or something. I don't know. It is good that you can eat seafoods to substitute for other meats.

I hate it that your foods are so narrowed down. Do you feel that way. Or do you feel like you still have plenty of foods to choose from. Do you ever get upset about not being able to eat the other foods. I guess I could handle not being able to eat eggs, even though I like eggs pretty much. But no meat. I don't eat meat everyday, but I think it would bother me alot if I couldn't have any. Can you not eat cake or anything that has eggs in it? That could get pretty serious if you can't eat anything with eggs in it. Couldn't it?

Hi chrystaltears how are you doing and how is the allergic? I dont have problem to eat small slice cake or small slice of salted eggs as long as not boiled or fried eggs. actually it doesnt bother me too much, I can eat it when I really really want but then I must balance it with herbal drinks. I love seafoods so I don't mind to avoid meats. I dont mind to be told not to eat egg or meat but just dont tell me not to eat chillies, I couldnt eat without chillies.

Yep. Me. Pork was always one of my favorite meats, especially ham and pork chops and I'd eaten it all my life. A couple of years ago I discovered that every time I ate it, I started itching all over. There was no swelling or nausea, but it's a very strange itch - almost like it's inside my skin - a horrible feeling. At first I thought it was something in the "traditional" pork, so I tried organically raised pork, but it was the same thing. I also developed a lesser allergy to some nuts and seeds around the same time. The best way to tell is to not eat anything except food that you know is safe for a few days, then slowly add suspect foods back into your diet and see how you react. At least that's what they told me.

All of that said, you could still be allergic to something more specific in pork, like something in the way it was processed.

I'm not sure exactly how the meat distribution works, but there are only a few major producers in the US, so there's a good chance of getting pork from the same producer. Whether that means it's all processed the same or not, I don't know. Probably the only way to be sure is to just try a little. If it bothers you, try to find organic or at the least, locally grown pork and eat a little bit of that. If it bothers you, then you'll know it's the pork itself.

I was amazed when twice within a week or a week and a half I had the reactions, and both times I had eaten pork steak. Anything else I had had that day, I have on a very almost every day habit or whatever I was trying to say! Gosh that makes me mad when I lose my word or train of thought. Do you do that. Anyways, Both times I had had pork steak, and I have a real bad habit of not even thinking to use salt (no salt), so I don't even know if I had used the no salt the first time. At one time I wondered if it was the oil, but I use the oil bout every single night for popcorn, so I counted the oil out. You know, it could very well be something in the processing. Out of my ignorance, I have to ask, would the different supermarkets get their meats from processors who use the same products to process or would trying to switch supermarkets on that particular meat or I guess all meats help I wonder. What do you think?

I call myself the "Alien" because I'm allergic to so many foods it seems that I should've been born on another planet! Regarding pork allergy, black pepper can make a pork allergy worse. You might find you can handle pork if you have NO black (or white) pepper with it. Now, you may be like some of my friends who think a meal isn't complete without pepper, but its just a suggestion. This does not include red peppers, like hollow peppers/chilies, only the black/white kind (I know, it comes in various colors - avoid all those).

I am allergic to both pork and black pepper - I don't really like black pepper anyway so I would never use it or have it in the house if there weren't other people to consider... my roomie does carefully cook my pork away from hers unless we are doing a dish that she'll eat without pepper added during cooking.

come to think of it, I did use black pepper last night, I think. I am pretty sure I did, really. That is a thought. Who knows it could even be the pepper I used. It sits right next to the no salt, so usually if I get out the no salt, I automatically use the black pepper too. I think I am going to have to take one off each time until I have no side effects. I will take off the pepper the first time, I will take off the no-salt then. If it continues I will have to consider that it could be the way it was processed. So from that, I will not know if it is the processing or if it is actually the pork. Huh. Something to think about. Thanks for the thought.

Hi DoctorDidi! I am sorry you are allergic to something you enjoy eating. But, will you answer a question for me? What are prawns? Is it a nut, like pecan? Or is it a fruit? Or something else? Curious.

You are lucky that your allergy didn't put your life at risk. My husband was told by the doctor when he had an allergy , that we should be careful of getting allergy because they make us short of breath and die. Hence, at the first sign of an allergy, we should take medications for it now to swell more and endanger our breathing. I guess in your case, maybe its the seasoning that you put in your steak, or the steak itself may not be that fresh anymore. Haven't they done a test as to determine what was it that gave you the allergy?

Well, I did wonder if I was going to die or not. Felt like I might. I had no earthly idea what was going on. I am going to x out the no salt and black pepper and see what happens, but then I wont know if it is the processing of the pork or if it is the pork itself. Like a guy said early, he tried natural pork and he still had the reactions. I forgot to mention that after the second tests at the emergency at the VA, they said I had seritonim syndrome from two medications that taken together were causing these reactions. Well, I was weaned off them, and, guess what? It wasn't seritonim syndrome at all. So no, we hadn't gone to allergy tests, because they thought it was the other.

You are right. I have an appointment in October with another department where I go to the doctor, and I am going to talk to them about that during that visit. But, you see I was at the emergency room in the VA as well as the local hospital, and they took tests and decided it was seritonim syndrome, so I have to let them know differently next time I am there.

It would really be best that an allergy tests be done . That way, it could be determined what are your allergens, so you can avoid them.

Allergies can pop up suddenly. I have a bad allergy to shell fish. If I try eating lobster & end up wretching & looking like the hunchback. I doubt it's the pork chop themselves that your allergic to. What are you cooking it in or seasoning it with. All lot of people are allergic to peanuts, are you using peanut oil?

Begin looking like a hunchback. Hmmm. That's bad, isn't it? Don't eat anymore fish. I don't want you to go through that anymore. It's too awful! I don't know what it is I am allergic to. I guess I am not allergic to peanuts. I did not have any those last two times recently that I had the reactions. I am not using peanut oil yet. My sister n law just suggested that to me a few days ago, but with my mind like it has been in the last couple of years or so, I went right out and picked up the canola oil that I always use. No cholesterol or sodium. That is why I started using it. I just don't know. I may figure it out myself, and then again the doctor may have to do itl. I would love to know tho, so if it is something I could avoid, I would like to begin avoiding it.

Interesting. I have a similar itchy problem but not the swelling. I have been told that it is a complication of my illness, chronic fatigue syndrome. I had not considered an allergy. Years ago I got eczema for the first time in my life. I was told it could have been caused by the base metal necklace I was wearing. Then I got a rash from wearing wool next to my skin, the first time in 40 odd years. Now it means that I cannot wear wool next to my skin and I always used to be able to. I seem to have trouble with anything that tickles my skin as that causes an itch that just gets worse with scratching. For me the worst time is when I am trying to sleep and the itch starts on my ankles or wrists and the more I scratch the worse it gets until it drives me insane. My only solution is to take a pill. I use Telfast to kill the itch but it is not a cure and I wish I had one.

It is such a nuisance, isn't it? I have learned from the last 2 times that if I take to allergy pills, the itching goes away within just a few minutes. From the last 2 times that it happened to me, I had about 4 or 5 itchy places about an inch and 2 above my hairline in the back, and they keep itching from time to time. I put ointment on there and it gets better and then a couple of days later. There it is again. Itching me like crazy on the same bumps.

I wasn't aware of the fact that you can develop an allergy to foods you consume on a regular basis. I found out this is possible after reading other users responses to your topic. At first I tought the allergy was caused by an ingredient used to season the steak.

I didn't know that either. I am not surprised tho, from all the meds I am taking, I think they have messed up my system. If that can happen. I am thinking seriously about getting off the meds to see if I feel good like I used to. I didn't know I had any health issues until I went to have a complete check up and now I try to keep up with my meds. Nothing serious tho. Yes, from what everyone is saying and what has happened to me, sounds like it surely does happen. Weird huh?

Allergic to pork. I've known so many who got sick because of too much indulgence in pork. They either suffer from cancer, hypertension or cardiac desease but I never have I encountered anyone who developed allergies to pork. I don't eat pork. I believe this one of the dirtiest meat ever so even if I am not a Muslim I don't eat pork so I am happy I am free from any pork allergy if indeed there is such a thing. So far I don't think I have serious food allergies with the food I eat. But I noticed I have some allergies with local chocolates so always refrain from eating them. I wonder what difference this local chocolates have over imported ones. When I eat just a piece of local chocolate I'd sneeze and sneeze but with imported chocolate never would I ever experience this.

Yes, I guess pigs are pretty nasty arent they? Whew, have you ever been on a pig farm. OMG! What a stink. It is the most repulsive smell.! A friend of mine who went to college forever to be a vet had a pig farm before she became a vet. What a stench! It is a shame to be allergic to chocolate from anywhere. Feels like it ought to be a sin! Where would I be without my chocolate. (probably on a date with a fine looking man who likes thin bodies on a woman). OH, I'm not that bad, but I could use losing about 25, I guess. Okay, I wonder why you are allergic to local chocolate and not imported. Do you think there is somekind of law that says the states have to use some type of ingredient or preservative that other countries don't have to use? Don't know, just guessing!

That is bad to hear, about your problem. How can they diagnose you a cancer just like that. Its good that you don`t have it, its horrible disease. I think i am not alergic to any food, I didn`t recognize that. I was having some alergic few years ago. But it was alergic to mites and house dust. Its not good to have any alergic, but thay say its the most widespread disease these days.

I am glad you don't have those allergies anymore sergino77. I am glad I don't have allergies to dust, cause I have some dust now. I don't care how often I clean, there's dust somewhere. It amazes me how fast it gets there! Yeah, it was bad that they said cancer. It was the doctor in the emergency room and a resident doing rounds with him, and after they listened to my symptoms, they said in harmony 'carsinoma cancer' and smiled, like they were tickled cause they said it at the same time, but then it freaked my daughter out. I briefly, gave it some thought,(very briefly), and what I thought was "I have been meaning to get more life insurance for my daughter, brother, mother and nephew". Then I came out of it and said 'I don't have cancer.' They haven't even taken a test. And they were wrong ha ha! No cancer!

I am allergic to certain chocolates though I am a certified chocolate lover. The good news is that not all chocolates are against my system but I still have to taste and observe which one can do me good or not. Sometimes my tummy is acting up against certain milk. And again I love milk. What a Life! It is just food but I cannot enjoy it that much. I develop some rashes when I eat foods that are somewhat fishy.

I do not know how in the world I would make it through this life it I could not eat chocolate. I think I would just have to be put 6 feet under for this to happen to me. I just love my chocolate. Although, I have been pretty good lately about keeping it out of my house most of the time, but unfortunately, there is all the chocolate I could possible eat at my daughters where I am everyday for at least 8 hours. Funny thing tho, lately my body has not been craving it like it normally does. The body's system does change from time to time, doesn't it?

I actually started similar topic before I saw yours. Yeah I am allergic to chicken, citrus fruits and some veges. It affected my life. When my allergy strikes, my face is like a disgusting view of the year! I feel bad about my situation. The cream I put on and the pills I take just help for a short time. The allergy keeps coming back.

Oh. So you are allergic to quite a few things. That is bad. I just am allergic to one thing so far. I am not quite sure which it is yet. I still don't want that other pork steak in my refrigerator. It has always been on of my favorite things. Sometimes, I get green bell peppers, mushrooms and onions and after I have rolled my steak in flower, I add these to the top while it is cooking and the flavors get into the meat. But I just don't want any right now cause I don't know what will happen to me physically.

I have not had any issues with allegies when eating sea food thank goodness. I love shrimp. My daughter always keeps shrimp also, but I very seldom eat any. But I do love cat fish. That is about my favorite of all. No, I would not be a happy person if I were allergic to it, but who knows, I was never allergic to anything that I have ever known of in the past, and then all of a sudden in my old age.....I am allergic to something. Not sure what yet.

Oh my you have to be careful to avoid any types of foods that have given you an allergic reaction. You just do not know how it is going to react each time. A few times as a child I ate shrimp, but never any types of fish, just did not like any other type. So at age 19 I went in to have a cat scan and the dye they injected caused me to go into an anaphylactic shock. My neck instantly began to swell, I broke out terribly, could not breath and was stuck in a paralyzed position. Thankfully I was in the hospital having the test done when this happened. They immediately injected me with benadryl and I did not have any side-effects thereafter. After extensive testing it was found that I am highly allergic to any form of seafood so I have had to avoid it since then. I questioned why shrimp did not cause this in the past and they said perhaps it was just a newly developed allergy. It is important for me to inform any time I eat out that I am allergic to any form of seafood.

You know, I am not big on seasoning at all. I like everything plain. I have always gotten upset when I visit people and they pull out all these chips and they have barbeque3, vinegar and salt, pickled, nacho flavored and all else except for plain. And I am the same way about my meat. I want the real flavor, so I don't use the sauces everyone else uses. As a matter of fact, the only seasoning that I use at all is a salt substitute called no-salt. So, I was curious as to whether there is something in there that I could be having a reaction to. I just don't know.
