ritzz: When I was five I was admitted into class 1. Nursery classes were not there in those days. We were taught our mother tongue - tamil. I remember the second class teacher Mrs. Savithri who was very good and also Mrs. Vasantha, teacher. I remember the first tirukural -- two line couplet which conveys a lot. tirukural is translated into various langauges including english. Even management principles are told in two lines. --ex. Identify the man who can do the job and entrust the job to him.

Yes, I remember them very much and taught them to my nieces and nephew. It was some of the things that they remember the most when they were two-three years old. Especially rub a dub dub.

Children have incredible memories and can remember quatrains and alphabet by 2 to 3 years of age. There have been products that sell to children to read at this age, but there is some skeptics that don't think my nephew thomas said gorilla after the word was spelled at 1 a few months. This is one of my nieces I taught nursery rhymes to at 2 to 3 years old.

I don't remember many stories from nursery school but I remember reading Dr. Suess books to my little brothers when they were that age. Their favorite was Hop on Pop.

I am reminded of Baa Baa black sheep and other nursery rhymes my children learnt thirty years ago. Nowadays I am fascinated by "Clap your hands", "if you are happy.."--these nursery rhymes i like very much.

When I was little I knew this version: Jack and Jill Went up the Hill to fetch a pale of water Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after. But when I grew up I learnt another version Jack and Jill Went up the Hill to fetch a pale of water. God knows what they did up there they came back with a daughter

Here's another one: Mary had a little lamb its fleece was white as snow and everywhere that Mary went the lamb was sure to go. Here's the other version:: Mary had a little watch she swallowed it one day and now she is taking epsom salt to pass the time away.

yes thanks to u also for startig the discussion ,it ws nice to remember those school days and those rhymes. Those days were really golden ,however at that time we dont even know anything of this world ,so unknown we are of the future as we never think of such futures,However now at present when we think of the past we recollect the memories, why do u think we could not predict the future at that time? would it not be nice if we could go back and rewrite a better future for ourselves? For me if givne chance then i will write someting like this, study well, have good friends all round, have good job ,get married ,have children and get settled in life ,enjoy the life and let the people admire us,i would do my life so,However now its late, the age gone so far that it can not be re written or now achieve it.

Yup, I am still remembering it clearly. And anyway, I am still keeping the song book about those nursery poems.. . It was my parents who introduced me that nursery poems. When I was child, teachers on kindergarten mostly taught about local nursery poems instead of English one. So it was on my local language. I think it would being understandable better with that way.. I can't speak English when I was child...

Hi ritzz, I have rejoined my nursery class again so I am very much remembering all those beautiful rhymes. I mean, my kids are learning (my younger son is nursery now) so I am listening them once again. In addition, we have collections of rhymes in a CD as well as in book form. Now children are luckier as they can enjoy the rhymes in visual format too.

Hiya ritz, Still remember them yes. How can I forget them? "Ba Ba Black Sheep" is one of my favourites there are many others that are not so famous or popular. Love "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" too. Oh yes and Humpty Dumpty as well you see there are quite a few that I did not learn right away I learned them more when my kids were very small.xxx

There are just some things that stay with you. Nursery rhymes are included. I loved nursery rhymes as a child. Now that I am an adult with teenagers of my own, I can still remember my favorite nursery rhymes word for word. I can be involved in an activity and the words and tune to the Muffin Man will just pop into my head.

I remember those! I use to sing them all the time when I was just an infant. I went to preschool and the lady would sing it all the time for us to sleep. I never slept though, the nursery rhymes just kept me awake all the time. Do you know the Tv show "Play school"? I use to love that show and I watched it everyday at home as a child. I learnt all my nursery rhymes from that show. Now I only remember the song tune of the rhymes, I don't remember the lyrics. Do kids still learn nursery rhymes today?
