Why does she crawl under the covers and then cry like she's lost?

I've had my kitty for about 3-4 months now... and she's often done something I think is just a little bit weird. She's get into a bed (usually mine or the one in the guest room), crawl under the covers until she's just a little lump in the middle of the bed, and then she'll start mewing and whining or "crying" as I'm sure most seasoned cat-owners call it. I'll usually come whip the covers off her, and then she'll be back to business as usual. She doesn't do it everyday, but it does happen at least 2-3 times a week. Any idea why she would do this? I'm not sure it would be cause she's hungry or cause she wants attention... She's done it right after getting fed and right in the middle of me playing with her before. Anybody else's cat do this?

Some cats love to be covered up, some HATE it, and some are just strange about it... Sounds like you got one of the last ones! I think she likes the idea until she gets up there and maybe gets confused - I don't know. Ping runs off, Sparky gets in there and then can't seem to find his way out, he doesn't make a sound, he's like a feral in that way, but he'll go round and round until you pick the cover up...

actually, he more oozes around, but then again, if he ran around on a twin bed he'd soon find an edge!

Like the blob? lol I can see that. I guess it looks more like a blob oozing around then a cat running when you're watching from over the covers.

Sounds very much like my cat does fall into that category! lol Sounds like Sparky's a funny sight when he's running around under the cover.

As you know there are different kinds of meows each for a different reason. Here is a link that might guide you http://www.cat-behavior-explained.com/why-do-cats-meow.html

I know about the different meows, and that's part of the reason I'm a little confused. It's not a terribly loud meow, it's pretty quiet and a little bit of a whine. It doesn't really fit into any particular category except "crying", but it's not loud. It's not really a howl or anything....

I think your little one wants attention and a cuddle perhaps. Give it to her! If she is healthy and eats well all is fine.

Our pet cat Lolly who deserted us - Male cats do leave home and sometimes come back
This fellow Lolly walked into my life from nowhere - a wee bit of a kitten. Stayed with us for 3 years and then disappeared. He came on the scene a few days back but my dog Preiti simply refuses to have him back. I get choked to see him roaming the streets but looks well fed. Someone seems to have adopted him.

Haha.. I remember two cats I had who loved to crawl under the cover and slept there like two lumps. I cannot remember them crying in that situation, even when they were small..so they must have felt comfortable..!? I wonder if your cat wants a bit of excitement now and then and pretends to be lost.. That might be a sort of playing..who knows..something for researches to scratch their heads about..

Well she's actually officially a cat now, turned 1 year old this month, and she hasn't done this in awhile. She does crawl under covers and sleep there like a lump, but I can't recall her crying in recent months. I posted this quite awhile ago! I'm not entirely sure why she ever did it, but she did it quite a bit in the months after I had just gotten her. It might have been a kitten thing.

(Laughs) Maybe your kitty is very independent and just does not want to play. On the other hand however, your kitty (as does most animals) may be fleeing from something it sees that you cannot see. Most animals and very young children can see things that you may not see.

Hmm... maybe. But it seems to me like she wants to play. I never thought about her seeing something she thinks is dangerous. .. My Mom's theory was that she would go under the covers cause she was curious, but then start crying cause it was dark and she couldn't see me. It didn't sound right. lol

Maybe the same reason why you hide beneath your covers as a child? Just my guess though. My cats haven't done weird stuff. All fall around the normal thins cats do, but I would love it if they do something weird though. Going back to topic, maybe your baby's scared of something and wants you to comfort her?

Maybe. But there are a number of reasons kids hide under covers. Everything from being scared to just hiding from Mom (and thinking that Mom can't see them there. lol) She doesn't appear scared until she's under the covers and crying, so I find it pretty strange. She'll just nose around like she's exploring and work her way under, and then start crying! It's kinda funny to watch, but it still puzzles me.

Hmm... Perhaps your kitten likes the warmth, as well as the security, of hiding under the blankets. But then, when she wants to come out, she doesn't quite know how to get out on her own. So, she meows for your attention to assist her in getting out. That's my best guess. Other than that, I'd say it's curiosity? But remember, curiosity killed the cat! So, be sure to not leave your kitten unattended under the blankets for too long, because if she cannot find her way out, she could possibly suffocate.

Oh no! Now you've made me paranoid! I think maybe it might be something like that. She always seems curious when she's first going under the covers, but then she just wiggles around and cries. I would think she could figure out that's the way it worked by now... but oh well.

That's good to know. She is on the bigger side of being a kitten, but she's still a kitten.

I didn't mean to scare you. I only said that so you would keep it in mind, and be cautious. Just for now while she's a kitten. When she becomes an adult cat, she will probably be able to find her own way out.

Lots of cats like to crawl under bed covers. However one of my cats, when she gets under , she gets scared. She doesn't howl like yours, but gets all agitated, and rushes out. If she cant find her way out she scrambles a lot until I pull back the cover for her. My guess is your ktten wants to get under the cover, but then either cant find her way out, or gets scared. She may even still have some baby behaviour in her, wanting attention from her Mum.. you! She sounds real cute.

She's still technically a kitten, even though she's a big kitten by now... 6 months old. So it's probably baby behavior. My best guess, and the one most people have guessed, is same as yours... that she wants to crawl under but then can't get out or gets scared. Thanks for your response!

Gosh, Ally, this is a new one for me. I have never seen this before. I guess I am just too used to keeping guinea pigs. I hope you are getting the help and advice you need.

I'm not oh-so-super concerned cause it doesn't seem like it's hurting her... but it sure is a head-scratcher for me! Thanks for your response, Leafy!
