Some days ago Indian hockey team stole the limelight beating Pakistan in a keenly fought match to win Asian Champions Trophy. Not an easy task to accomplish at that level. When the victorious Indian team came back home, they were to get the shock of their lives. They were given a mere twenty thousand rupees as incentive! The shoddy treatment meted out to the team shocked the whole nation. Remember, hockey is India's national game. Indian hockey players did the right thing: they refused to accept the award of that paltry amount.
Hockey is a difficult game to play. India and other Asian countries reigned supreme in hockey when dribbling skill mattered. As soon as reforms were introduced in the format of the game, Asian supremacy in the game ended. Astroturf and hit and run became the norms which the Asian teams found difficult to cope with. Indian hockey fell into the hands of corrupt politicians and bureaucrats who made it a habit to treat it as their private turf. The decline started and the rise to glory is consuming much of the time. Who will clear up the mess in Indian hockey?
