Did you know that rabies is a sever viral infection of the Central nervous System that is communicated through the spit of our furry friends and other domesticated animals and wildlife as well. is a highly fatal viral encephalomyelitis. It shows it's symptoms as extreme excitaion and delirium, maniacal behavior, violent and painful spasms of the muscles of deglutition at the mere sight of food or water, which account for the name hydrophobia or Lyssa.
There are a lot of information about rabies in the net I would only like to tackle on basic information and how we can prevent this from hurting us and our beloved pets.
1st most important thing to know is that our pets needs to be vaccinated 3 months and up. and at least a quarterly check up with the vet or an annual booster of the rabies vaccine is essential.
And for post exposure:
a. wash wound with running water and soap to remove saliva
b. Take person to emergency facility or hospital
c. Provide anti-tetanus or antibacterial meds per doctors orders
d. Vaccine is given
-Human diploid Cell rabies vaccine is given along with Rabies immune Globulin
-HDCV is given with a number of days interval of after after the initial injection 3 days then 7 then 14 then 28
-the RIG is given on the site but not the same time as the HDCV is given
This is basic detail regarding how we can help our pets to avoid or further developing there rabies and also on how to help ourselves once we are exposed to this particular disease.

Talk to your vet.. You can get a 3 year rabies shot.. Then you don't need to have it done yearly. This was information that I found on:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080625070304AA7R0g0
I looked it up since my dog just got her rabies and the vet advised me that my cats and dog actually only need the shot every three years. I thought it was every year myself.
All the other information is helpful in ensuring proper care for our pets.
