Ok so this is the first time I encountered a type of problem. My friend's laptop is toshiba and it's DVD drive and the keyboard are not functioning. The DVD drive doesn't appear on my computer, only the C and D drives. I don't think that the hard ware is the problem so I tried to reformat it as what he told me. I can't access the BIOS because the keyboard isn't functioning then when I put the CD windows installer it doesn't read at all. So what happens is that it proceeds to windows start up and I can't access the CD boot making me unable to do the reformatting. So I tried searching many solutions on the web but still they didn't work, even changing the registry to make the DVD appear again and looking it up in device manager it all fails. I used a USB keyboard then I was able to access the BIOS but the DVD drive wasn't there. What do you think is the problem? Is it really the hardware?

The only solution is to find another laptop and to take the DVD from that one and try it on this laptop,it`s not that hard to do it and if that one works then you`ll know the DVD is broken. If that don`t work then try to use a windows from an USB stick and see if that one will see the DVD.

I'll try putting it on another laptop but I haven't tried opening a laptop before. I'm used to fix desktop computers and i know about their hardwares but not in laptops. Laptops hardwares are smaller and I'm not familiar to it's hardware. I'll just try it later as for now I'll search more solutions in the web. Thanks for the advice.

if your keyboard or dvd drive doesn't work just buy a new one and replace it. this is because if you repair it or do some alterations there will be problem again. so it is better to replace them.

if your BIOS is not showing DVD drive. then it's a hardware issues only.. and your keyboard too having hardware issue. but it's not like that you need to replace your DVD drive or keypad.. it may be some cable is disconnected or unplugged from circuit.. it can be possible if your laptop has travelled (!! :-) )
I had one issue that my laptop hard disk was not able to detect in BIOS.. but it was just loose connection.. technician did in two mins with no cost as it was under warranty..

If the BIOS can't see the DVD drive then it has to be a hardware fault.
If your USB keyboard works then it has to be a hardware fault again.
I would test the laptop with an external DVD drive in a USB caddy and if that works then it is a hardware fault. I would open up the laptop and check the connections. If it still does not work then it is probably the motherboard so dump it and buy another.
If the OS is XP or Vista then there was a MS automatic update that stopped all DVD drives working but that stopped external USB DVD drives as well. That was a real mightmare!

Don't you love those catch 22's. It was easier if you are willing to reinstal everything when we could boot off the floppy drive and format. Some computers allow you to boot from the usb with a stick (they come in all sizes these days)just by plugging in and rebooting but others require you to have installed a specific (file or setup), sorry that is a grey area for me but might be an option to try? Good luck with it.

i think the problem is the hardware inside the laptop, maybe the cords are unattached... check the led light on DVD drive and as for the keyboard, maybe it is busted or something.
