I prefer to be called by my nickname

The other day, I saw a friend who was riding in the same jeepney I was. She didn't see me so I called her attention. She asked me a question and she called me by my full first name. I was surprised and I didn't know how to react but I gave a chuckle. This is because people hardly ever call me by full first name. My first name is long, and I have been used to people, especially friends calling me by my nickname. And I have always thought of her as a friend and I can even remember her calling me by my nickname. I wonder why she blurted out my full first name instead. It kinda embarrassed me, and I don't why actually. My first name sounds too formal and sometimes, people call me that when they are angry or frustrated with me. So I prefer people calling me by my nickname. Even my professors do not call me by my first name nor my last name. They call me by my nickname. ^^ How about you?

Me too. My full name consists of 3 long names, add my mother's maiden name, plus my last name which has 2 words. Only my professors call me that. But I prefer my close friends and family to use only my nickname.

You've got three names??? Are you born in this generation? *peace* I thought only children born in this generation are "punished" with very long names! I have a niece who also have three names and she had problems writing her name on a Grade four sheet of paper. ^^

I encountered pretty much the same problem in school...from kindergarten and all throughout college, and even in graduate school. During pop quizzes, I would still be in the process of writing my name by the time my teachers would already be asking the 1st or 2nd question. :D

Why be offended. Maybe she can recalled you by that name. Is your name named after an angel, and or saints? Are you old friends? Even if our names are long or not very nice just like it. My name also is quite long and very provincial but I like it.

Well, I wasn't really offended. I was more of embarrassed. ^^ I don't think I'm named after a saint or an angel but my mother said I was named after a great wizard in the history.

Well there are people who called people by other names. I am usually called by my nickname as my name is quite long. And did you know that Ms. Shamsey Supsup's name is Marcelina, a very familiar name. So whats in a name.

I have people who call me by my nickname or a short name of my full name. Although I don't mind people calling me by my full name. I mostly was given a nickname ever since I was a kid by my brother and they haven't stop calling me by that even though we are old now.

Only people who do not know me call my by my full name. I don't go by my full name except on my bills and on my drivers license. Even at work my name on my paycheck is a shortened version of my name.

Using a shortened version of your name is allowed in checks? It's not allowed here! When one's name is shortened in a check, it is considered a mistake and the one who made the check will have to correct it and sign over the correction.

Hi secretbear! I have one girlfriend that everyone calls her by her nickname and I call her by her real name. The I have another girlfriend who goes by her nickname mostly except at work. I guess it depends on the person. I hate my name and some people just shorten it, but it isn't a long name to begin with so it doesn't make a big difference. But, I do know what you mean. When you are used to people calling you my your nickname it is weird when someone uses your full name.

My first name to me is very old fashioned and I have never liked it. For several years now I have been using the short form of my name and I had to specifically ask by siblings, several times, to call me by the short form of my name. The only person who remembers to call me by the name I prefer is my elderly father, other than friends and acquaintances, who all use the pet name. My father did not like his first name so he swapped it for his middle name and that's what he has been known as since. My older sister has a name which she uses formally and a pet name all the friends and family use...it is a short form of her name. My next sister gets called by the short form of her name but she prefers the long version. My brother's wife uses a short form of her name yet none of my siblings will remember my request. I sign all my emails, cards and letters with the short form of my name but they always use the long version. It really cheeses me off.

Well my first name is actually quite short so people call me that. But when I was younger, there were a lot of nicknames for me. My already short name became even shorter to a mere one syllable too. Maybe your friend forgot your nickname? Or she wasn't sure if you'd still prefer to go by that name?

I guess nobody likes to be addressed by their fist name or even full name, it sounds too rude for a stranger and too formal for a friend.. lol =D Most of the time, full name will only be called when we are waiting for doctor or interviews.. haha There's this once my friend's mom called me with my full name, and i was shocked like u too. I'm surprised she called me that way because given her age, she should know better than to address me that way

Hello secretbear, In my opinion, that is insulting and out most disrespect. back in the school days, instead of calling my nick name, they end up calling my last name, i really didn't get that. anyways, i don't talk to those people anymore. sometimes, we just have to choose whom we talk to, people change, and the way they treated us before may not be the same thing again

Like you, I prefer to be called by my nickname. It is very casual and somehow so simple to be called by your nickname. But when somebody calls you by your first name, it is either, the occasion calls for a formal address or it could be that the one calling you wants to "really catch" your attention. Nowadays there are ways to handle embarrassment especially when being called by the first name. You just have to handle it like any mature individuals. We are just not used to be called by our first name. Yes it is also true that some people, my mother and siblings too, they call me by my first name when they want to be paid attention to. And it works for them because when they do, I immediately come to them and listen.

Before I entered the university, I am used to people calling me my middle and last names, as that's what I was named. Everyone back at my hometown called me that except for my family members who calls me by my nickname. When I entered university, I only realized the difficulty for people to grasp and learn about my middle and last name. People have difficulty calling my name, so end up making me to thought of a nickname for myself. And I think, I already have one back at home, why not used that one. Ever since I used that name, everyone started calling me that, and it is indeed very convenient as the name is easily recognizable and short to call. I'm good with the new calling of my name in the university but I do miss how my people call me in hometown by my middle and last name. _

I go by part of my middle name and I find that I rarely ever hear anyone call me by my first name and when they do, I have to actually think that they are talking to me. I hate my first name and it is my mother's first name too, which she goes by.

We have this in common except that I legally changed my original first name to the nickname many years ago. Once in a while the longer original shows up on some legal document or another, but everyone I know now calls me what I want to be called.

Regardless how you want it, there are times in our lives when the people we know could just remember how your name was spelled like or how it was as registered on the lists. I am also called by my nickname in school and there was one particular even that shook me. It was when we were busy copying assignments in the library (a no noise place) then a guy (who was in another class) screamed my first name and everyone looked at us! and I asked him why he was calling me that way, then he said "isn't that your name?" then all I could do is smile because it was. I don't know where he got it, but I guess he just saw it in the list or something. Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

Oh, this remind me of the way my daughter sense if I am already mad at her. I call her with her full name, name and surname! Well, maybe your friend is sending a signal and why not try to decipher this signal. Tlk to her about it and if she says, there's nothing at it,then have your peace of mind!

I don't have a nickname. I have 3 names (2 names named after my granny the 3rd my parents added because they found the first two ugly so do I), the 3rd is the name my parents called me. You can tell that if you go to the city hall. So that is my name. I don't like people to call me at my first name. It's an ugly one and also I don't have the feeling it's me. So if anyone tries I will correct that at once. I even do that in letters. I ask people not to call me by that name I also never subscribe with it. If you don't like to be called that way then tell people so. Might be the one who did call you by your full first name was not thinking anything about it. But I can tell you if you correct her she will never forget that.
