Do you spend more money at the end of the year?

The end of the year means many festive occasions. It also means we are likely to spend more money for gifts giving, and decorations or celebrations. Do you usually spend more money towards the end of the year? Would you work extra hard or save harder now, so that you have more money to spend later on?

It sure does seem like that way for me. Then again with the holidays and all of the insanity that goes along with, it is like a crowbar that pries open the pocket book and causes the money to fly out. Granted, I try to reign in some more destructive spending impulses but with all of the things, its hard to reign in much of anything to say the least. Of course, the remaining months of the year, I make up for it, by cutting as many mores as absolutely feasible. There are just going to be a lot of times where that money that I save is a cushion that I can fall back o towards the end of the year. Still as the holidays get rather closer, there comes a time where more money is going to get shaken from my clenched fists.

Hi Megamatt, I hope you keep your sanity this year for once! Maybe you can start planning now, so that you know exactly what to buy. I can understand the crazy shopping when the great sales is on. We seem to think that everything is dirt cheap, and if we do not buy now, we will regret it forever. After that, we will have regrets, and start asking ourselves why we buy so much nonsense. I think if you can go with someone who hates shopping, you may spend less. While I do not usually buy for Christmas, I tend to spend more for Chinese New Year, which comes right after Christmas. The only soft spot is my love for chocolate, and Christmas sales is best for stocking up chocolates.

Yes, like many other people I also tend to spend more on year ends because that's also the time for me and my husband to have a vacation and visit my parents in my hometown. Since I know our schedule, I try my best to save some months before the year ends and also I try to look for promos for our airplane tickets, that way we are able to save good amount that we can use to buy other things. Aside from having the vacation, that's also a time for me to treat my parents out and just enjoy the time with them...and of course we need to spend some money again for such enjoyment but that's just fine since we can earn that money back again but the happiness and fun that we will be having is just priceless!

Hi Ckyera, that is good. I am sure your parents look forward to the get together time as much as you did. I hope you and your husband can get a good bonus this year, so that you can spend without worrying too much about it. Maybe you can double the time you spend online for the next two months, so that you have some extra money for the afternoon tea or coffee with your friends and loved ones.

Hi Scheng, usually by end of the year, i tends to spend a little more money to buy gifts for exchange among family members. Just to make the little ones happy. Besides that, we do spend a little for decorating our home as well. Since things are getting expensive year by year, so we always trying to buy things according to our budget. But usually in the end, i tends to spend a little extras. Sometimes, it is really hard to spend according to our budget.

Yes, that's why whenever Christmas and Chinese New Year arrive, i am sure i will need to spend quite a lot of money. Because we are used to have all those fun activity around. Indeed, i also don't want to end-up eating maggie mee for new year eve...

Hi Myfb, you have been here in mylot for ages! And you still do not know the trick to earn here? If you see those old timers, you will notice that nearly all of them are used to writing extremely boring and lengthy post. They have learnt from experience that a single lengthy post is worth more than a hundred one-liner posts. I think you can reach payout every month if you double the length, while maintaining the same quantity.

Hi Myfb, fortunately for us, we do not have the habit of exchanging gifts. But that period is very close to Chinese New Year. Since the sale practically runs through Christmas to Chinese New Year, end of the year is really a time for spending money. Hard to imagine a Chinese New Year eating maggie mee!

It's only natural we spend the most at the end of the year, I think most shops get half or even more of their yearly revenue around Christmas time. I think I spend probably 30-40% more in December than any other months. Not just for gifts for others, but gifts for myself too:) you know, somehow you feel you deserve to spend more on yourself when it's Christmas:) and then there's also all the food we eat during that time.. By the way, I can't wait for Christmas this year!!:)

Hi Gocsa666, over here, we seem to spend all round the year. We have the Great Singapore Sale, where it is a concerted effort launched by the government for the whole country to go on sales. The two months of sales is basically targeting at the tourists, but we make use of the chance to stock up on items too. The period a month before Christmas to Chinese New Year is another long period of sales. The items are different, but we still have to spend more than usual. Some festive items are selling during this period.

Yes, every single year. when I was a student, I would save money from my allowance so I have money to buy gifts. When I already had a job, I use my December bonus to but gifts and new stuff. =)

Hi LoliRuri, I think you should continue the habit of saving every month for year end spending. If you are too used to the bonus, what happens if the company stops paying bonus? I think in this uncertain economic situation, it is hard for any company to maintain the same bonus payout year after year. If you save up throughout the year, you can even invest the bonus since you do not need to spend it.

Yes. I guess everyone would agree to this. People spend a whole lot of money by the end of the year. It's better to save money and work harder now since it's almost December.

Hi Clearwater, if you start to work hard here, you can at least have $20 more for Christmas! The payment for October will be made in the middle of November, and November payment will be made in mid December. Just in time for you to buy something special for yourself or your special love! I think I will work harder a bit to reach payout every month, instead of once in every two months. While Christmas is not really important to me, Chinese New Year is. Chinese New Year usually comes just after Christmas.

Hi Clearwater, you just have to make your post three times longer. Over here, the payment system pays for longer post, and not for a lot of short post. If you can make it a habit to write six sentences in a post, and spend about an hour here, you can make about 33 cents per day, which adds up to ten dollars per month. It is really not hard to do that. The trick is to respond to every discussion that you come across. Even if you have nothing much to write about, you can share your experience or ask some questions to show your concern.

Really? We celebrate Chinese New Year too. But not a big celebration. Yeah, the date usually sets on February.

Due to Christmas and a major birthday on 19th December plus my car I spend more money at the end of the year. I have many people to buy cards and presents for. I have to get a MOT for my car to prove that it is road worthy, renew my car insurance and get new road tax. At the end of last year I had all that expense plus a trip in January to Colombia. So I spent lots more in December 2010 and January 2011.

Hi Mazimaz, you are not the only one to spend more during the year end period. Many people also scheduled the payment of their insurance policies at the end of the year, so that they can use the bonus for paying insurance premium. I tend to spend more before the Chinese New Year, which always occurs about a month after Christmas. The shopping malls always have sales a month before Christmas and end right before Chinese New Year. It makes sense for us to make use of sales to buy gifts or stock up on necessities.

Well I do not have a set pattern of money spending. There are times when I tend to spend more during festival season. However, that is also not the case. Sometimes, I randomly get heavy expenses, which are unexpected, and my expenses go up. Regards,

Hi Sweety, you are the only one out of five persons who say expenses do not really go up during the year end. I think that is very rare, and it requires good planning on your part. Most people cannot really get away with festive spending. If the office has a Christmas party, and we all have to buy something, that is an extra expenditure. While we can cut down on vacation, we cannot really cut down too much on food. As for me, the period from Christmas to Chinese New Year is the time when I have to spend more. Since Chinese New Year comes right after Christmas, the merchants have sales for two months.

Yes, this is a well observed pattern of spending. Also, vacations and other activities with me and my family usually come up during this time too. So extra spending is really initiated by the last quarter of the year. I really don't work extra hard in the latter part of the year compared to the earlier parts. I just take into account and plan the spending for such a time. I do forecasts and budget my money even at the start of the year to eventually build up the needed money to spend during the year end.

Hi AgentGulaman, glad to hear that you have the foresight to save money right from the start of the year. It is surprising that many people do not even bother to do that. They just use their credit cards to shop for items, and when the festive season is over, they get very depressed over the debt incurred. It is really stupid of them, since everyone knows that we have to spend more money during the festive seasons.
