I (quickly) need recomendations for a new sewing machine. I am a qualified sewer, have a 1985 Singer 2010 and it is fantastic, but after 25 years... I want a new one with more stitches and options. I would like to hear your recommendation for a new sewing machine.
I currently am looking at Brother Innovis is*) and SInger QUantum Stylist 9960.
I had heard Singer isn't that great anymore, but in talking with a retailer...they said, yeah, that is how it used to be but they were bought out a few years ago and this 9960 is the second in their new line of new upper quality machines to try to regain their position at the top. I have read only a handfull of reviews...can't find to many as the machine just came out last year...and all are extremely positive. I also like that this has quilter functions and a wider free arm for quilting where the brother is about half as small. I do regular sewing and want the decorative stitches which both have...about the same price, but hte SInger has more than the Brother. But...I can't find anything to compare the two brands muchless these specific two machines.
So...tell my what you think..if you know anyone that has bought a new one lately...ask them for me. This will be my last "big" purchase for this life time... (I bought my current one 25 years ago and sewed the heck out of it and it is still in perfect condition) and I think I have worked a hard life to get it! I also am back into quilting and want to do more than just "stitch in the ditch" top quilting and need the free-foot option...both have it but again, the open arm area on the brother is about 3 inches smaller than the SInger..and in quilting...3 inches is alot!
Thanks for any comments, suggestions and if you have found any site that review these two machines...please post them for me. I have spent hours in the search engine asking all kinds of different ways for comparision of brands (not price) and came up empty.
Thanks for you help...also..maybe you know a sewing machine shop that might have some information?
Thanks! ANd hurry...I need to get it now before the money goes elsewhere!!!

The BEST is a Pfaff...I used to have one even on my sailboat...I found one that was a treadle ( foot power). It could sew anything from sails to jeans to dresses...I really miss that machine. Try to find a metal one. They are heavy, but it will be the last machine you ever have to buy!

I looked at the ones in the sewing store today and they were above my budget. I was looking for a Bernina but they to are above me. But thanks for the suggestion... and if I see one I can afford..I will check it out.

Oh, my, so sorry I didn't get to this before. Well, I have two of the brother Innovis D2500's (one for my vacation home and one here) and I just love them, but I must say the customer service is pretty terrible. But I love, love, love the machines. They are really rugged, too.
So, what did you end up buying?
