Promotion or higher position but lack of knowledge and skill

Yes, it happens that most of the people holding a high position in the organization are not qualified to hold the post. They were promoted or offered of that position with a very attractive compensation package because the boss like them personally. This results to failure in efficiently playing the role and responsibility that the job entails. If you find yourself in this situation, would you accept it? How would you deliver the task required without enough knowledge and skill?

This happen to me once a few years back and I refused that promotion offer. All my friends call me stupid ....."Hey that one life time opportunity, why you not take it?!!" (they say something like that). I can't accept that offer because I know what the real reason why my company want to promote me. It's not about my ability/skill/knowledge but because my reference. What they offer to me just too high for newbie.

That was one in a million gesture Olleenz. Congratulations for doing the right thing. Most employees are greedy with authority, positions and money without evaluating themselves if they are really capable and qualified for what the position requires. It is such a pity!

I am the one who said that Olleenz....the problem is that other people in the organization would suffer if you accept a high position with lack of knowledge and skill. For example, you accepted a managerial position for one department but you have no administrative skill, you will interact with other departments, how will you comply with their requirements, it's not their job to teach you....just an example, I believe it was the right thing to do.

I'm not said that I doing the right thing ...... I just feel that I'm not ready for that position. I believe the position that they offer to me not just need skill or knowledge but also experience and I miss the last part (hey I'm newbie, from where experience coming from ....?)

Yes you are right vasumathi....some people do not realize this that they are all excited to get the high position and salary, but they don't realize the responsibility that comes along with it.

In Greece's government departments, it is very common to find women who are obviously unqualified, and quite possibly mentally retarded, in the top positions. She who screams loudest!!!

Well if my boss offers me promotion I think in two ways; if I have no idea about the job or I lack the experience then I tell this honestly, honesty is necessary because in the future when I accept the promotion they will surely understand that I am not for that position and this will bring disappointment. Being honest is better than having pain.. And also if they still insist about giving this position to you, they know about the consequences. But sometimes although I may not have the experience or knowledge I know about the job and with some effort I know I can manage the job or task given. In such a situation I accept it without hesitation because I know myself and I am a fast learner and I can easily fill the gap by learning.

that is another option also....to learn as much as you can...but it is not good that you are already one year in that position and your main task is not fulfilled. Sometimes other departments are affected and suffer because the people in other department do not know anything. This is my own experience, some managers in our organization has been holding that position for a couple of years already and up to present they are still ignorant to prepare a proper business correspondence. So what happens, they come to me to prepare their letters. I have to stop what I am doing and my operational tasks and routine is affected. I have been dying to tell them this "hey, you have been drawing double my salary with all the privilege of a company car and housing and yet simple business letter you cannot do? Shame on you!".....just an example my dear.
