Environmentalism is a major interest for many mylotters. My own interest ended up being the theme of a PhD thesis, and even some of my songwriting found its way into the Green realm. BEYOND RECALL CH. In the language of the wise it’s said the word for world was forest, A word that we don’t use much anymore. For a time of greed and blindness turned the forests into deserts, And the word for world has changed beyond recall. 1. Like a lover with his memories of joys from times gone by, Of the lush and gracious bounty of her lips and breasts and thighs, We recall the green and leafy panoply above our heads, And a universe of golds and greens and reds. 2. Or like an old man reminiscing on his youthful strength and pride, His muscles firm, his eyes so keen, and passion in his stride. But now he sees the speckled patches on his cracked and drying skin, Like a desert parched and arid from the wind. CH. In the language of the wise it’s said the word for world was forest, A word that we don’t use much anymore. For a time of greed and blindness turned the forests into deserts, And the word for world has changed beyond recall. 3. Mother Nature knows her business well, her cycles are ordained, And Brother Sun and Sister Moon go hand in hand with wind and rain In a dance that has its purpose, and its pattern to unfold, A pattern that our greed had bought and sold. CH. In the language of the wise it’s said the word for world was forest, A word that we don’t use much anymore. For a time of greed and blindness turned the forests into deserts, And the word for world has changed beyond recall. 4. I could talk about the ozone, and the salty water holes, But my sorrow at the passing of her beauty grieves my soul, And I see my children’s children like the ancient Bushman clans Scratching life from dirt and rocks and shifting sands. CH. In the language of the wise it’s said the word for world was forest, A word that we don’t use much anymore. For a time of greed and blindness turned the forests into deserts, And the word for world has changed beyond recall. The verse that sums it all up for me is verse 4 - and indeed, I feel sorry for my son's generation, and for his kids and grandkids. This is not a world I would willingly be born into. Lash

Ah that song brought tears to my eyes. When I was a youngster I wanted to be a mother but now I am glad that I never had any children because I fear for the future of the earth. I watch the politians arguing that they do not want to be the first to do anything about climate change and since none of them want to be first nothing is done. I am angered by their greedy, selfish stupidity. They have no right to destroy the world that gives us life and yet they seem to have the power. They make movies like terra nova about how we poisoned the world and people cry out for change before it is too late, but the selfish ones with all the money and power refuse to do anything and threaten to destroy anyone who tries to fix the pollution problem. They feel safe because they figure they have a place in a nice rich bunker where they can wait out the deaths of the rest of us. They do not care if they destroy the future as long as they are rich today. I dream of Gaia, the power of the earth to fight back. Maybe she will and if she does there may not be many left to see the future.
