Is fair this situation?

A friend that is teacher just told me that once she got a phone call and had to go to the office. When she came back, the 80% of the pupils were messing about, throwing paper balls, and not in their seats. She told me, she told them off and then all the classroom got detention, which was, to stay in classrom on playtime and do exercises. Later on she thought that she might have not been done the right thing. At first she thought the kids that were not behaving, would feel bad for the innocent pupils that have had detention just because of them, without deserving it. But then she thought that maybe those naughty kids don't care about their classmates. Do you think it's fair to lower the pupil qualifications just because of this, or is it enough to punish them after classes or during the playtime?

See this is not going to be the easiest decision in the world to make. Because let's face it, there is really no way to tell who is exactly who had done the offending action when the entire class is mostly messing around. And who is really messing around. Not to mention most children do not care about anyone but themselves, so they don't care about innocent students being punished. It is not an easy decision to make. Especially if a student complains that they didn't do anything wrong. I know a teacher who got in a lot of trouble because they punished all of the students, not just the ones who were causing the trouble, because the right student complained to the right person. I don't envy the jobs of teachers to make these decisions. You're kind of not going to be able to make a good decision either way sometimes.

I agree with this to an extent. She has to make sure that they know she won't tolerate the behavior and she really has no way of knowing who was doing what they were supposed to. To share a personal experience similar to this.. In high school the cafeteria got too loud at lunch one day, so the principals decided that we would have quiet lunch for the next three days. Which wasn't exactly fair because not everyone was hollering and being loud. But it did teach those who did it that they needed to learn volume control (however the days after when the bell would ring they would shout and scream).

How can it ever be fair to punish the 20 percent who were innocent??? The teacher has eyes. Make a list when walking into the room. You won't get all the guilty but they might realize there are consequences the next time.

I agree with you, it is very unfair, but sometimes teachers have a lot of things in the head, I remember once when I was like 12, all of my classroom got detention except one of my best friends, and some kids picked on her, she got bullied for days. :(

to some extent, it is obviously unfair. Both teachers and students have their own rights. For the teacher, she has done a wrong thing------answer a phone during work, it is forbidden according to law or to the school rules. However, students also have done some mistakes regardless of their age---they are young, and are weak to control themselves. what they should do is to study in classroom but play and did other things. so in this case, it is not unfair for both you and your teacher. and for the teacher to publish the students who was naughty to some extent is right because the student should understand the mistakes he has done while for the teacher, she was also punished. in one word, teachers are humans as well as students. So let's forgive each other and to form a good relationship to each other, if so, we will be happy together and make great progress.

Yeah, teachers are not allowed to answer their own phone, but she received the phonecall in the school's phone, so maybe it was one of the teachers that had a free day and wanted something from her. You are right, they are too young, but how can you make them behave if they never listen? Sometimes you need to be tough for their own sake in the future.
