Just received $25 for reformatting a laptop and a computer. Well this is my sideline job all I do is reformat a computer (takes 1-2 hours). Do you think it's ok, I mean $12.50 to reformat a computer? I've been doing this for almost 3 years now and I've fixed more than 100 computers both mine and other people.

I would say that $25 is quite reasonable for reformatting two hard drives. Many people take their computers to repair shops to have this done and are spending far more than $25 for one machine. The fact that people keep coming to you to have this done is testament to the fact that the charge is fair. _Derek

Actually the usual rate of most technicians here is quite higher. They would ask for $16-$20 per computer. Complete reformat with basic softwares installed and some games. Others even charge $1 per game with size 500mb or more. $12.5 is ok for me because i'm not really a computer technician, it's just my sideline

Hey congrats, you are doing a good job and you are also getting a good payrate, I also repair computers and format them but 80% computers I have repaired are done for free for my friends, and when I charge someone, I charge about $5 for a format.

That sounds like an awesome side job, if you are good at it and you have been doing it for a bit of time, why not take advantage of making a few extra bucks on the side. Now a days every little of extra money helps. And $12.50 sounds like a reasonable price.

Oh my God, that is the best way to make money cleaning up a computer. For sure you really don't have to work yourself to make the money. Rather, you will make the computer do the work, and the only thing you loose is the time spent. There are so many computer users, and I believe that you will make an endless amount of money from reformatting laptops, notebooks and workstations.

$12.5 to reformat a computer? I think it's great enough and it's really just fine.. Well, as an IT student, sometimes I think reformatting computer isn't that hard for $12.5 :p. But, what can I say, not all people can being techie or geeks.. By the way, what do you think though? Is that $12.5 too less or too much?

I think its too less for providing a service.

To be honest, I think you are charging too low. As someone who has fixed computers on the side as well, I think you should at least charge twenty-five per each computer. Your time and skills are worth more than $12 dollars.

I honestly think that you are not charging people enough for your time to reformat the computers. My husband does the same kinds of things as a little bit of side work and he doesn't charge a whole lot either, but he does tend to stick with $10 an hour for the working on the computer and when he builds and fixes up one to sell he will take his time and how much was invested into the original equipment before he sets a selling price.

Actually around me the cheapest one would pay would be $60 - $80. However, if you continue to do so then with time you will get more asking for the help and you can raise a little bit as people will entrust you and that will be a nice little side business for you. So good idea to help out with the very low price as best computer gigs come from word of mouth.

That's fine already. Always look forward for a returning customer and recommending you as well rather than a more bigger income but only for a day. I know what you did is time consuming for I've seen my husband doing that in our own laptop and pc. But if you love what you are doing, I guess it won't be boring to you.

You should be getting atleast $20 per hour working on computers, maybe more depending on where you live.

Yes, I think that's a reasonable rate. Although it may take up to 2 hours to format one machine, if you are doing more than one at a time it may still only take the same time in total (because very little of the time involves actual human input). What you earn will depend on the 'going rate' for labour in your country. A useful guideline is the hourly rate that a garage will charge for labour in fixing a car. In the UK this is generally around £40 an hour so that is my 'target' rate for such jobs as reformatting, virus checking and other such 'maintenance' work. I mean that that is the rate that I OUGHT to be charging! In practice, I very often don't get that because I often do the work 'as a friend' or in return for other favours!

That's really nice because some technicians charge way too much when reformating and reinstalling systems. :) Maybe you'll get more money from helping others. :)

hi Jac, yes you are Filipino and I think that's a reasonable rate in our country. My boyhood friend charges around 500 pesos so that's about 12 dollars. Filipinos are very hospitable so after the work is done, they would even treat you to free snacks, lunch or drinks ( I do this for a job well done )
