Sedation methods for dentistry. Is one safer than the other?

I am getting sedated for my deep cleaning Monday because for one I HATE dentist and have really bad anxiety and two my fibromyalgia might act up that day and make it too much to bear (im usually good with high pain tolerance but not worth risking halfway through a deep cleaning and fillings etc)
When I was sedated at a different place for my wisdom teeth to be cut out it was through an IV. This place with cleanings and etc its through a series of pills you take the night before and day of.
I was wondering is there a difference in safety? Do you come to quicker with one than the other? (it has been too long to remember) or the dentists personal preference? If it was safer it would of course make me less anxious in getting everything done but if its so he can avoid machines to monitor me or something while im under I would kind of be nervous.

There is no such thing as totally safe sedation. All sedation carries risk. The pills that you are going to take are most likely Benadryl and another pill like it. It puts you in twilight sleep. You do not always go all the way out, but it leaves you with no memory of the procedure. They use it for colonoscopies too.
The major problem with the pills is allergies to the meds. They give you a much higher dosage than you will have ever taken of the over the counter product.
I would never do this...I would not even let the doctor sedate me when I had a Lumpectomy when I had cancer removed. I did it with Lidocaine.

if it werent for my anxiety and fibromyalgia i wouldnt be sedated. im good with enduring pain but fibro amplifies it and then knowing that get my anxiety up and i would just freak out!! im allergic or have bad reactions to a lot of meds so i almost prefer iv but i just had both done (pills extensive dental work and iv for scope down throat) and i did better and snapped out of it better with iv. of course it being in the building next to the hospital made me feel better also
