~Saving/making it -- in today's struggling economy~

I thought it would be a good idea to have a discussion on saving money as there are lots of things that each of us do that others may not think of!! So I will start with some of the things my family has done so far trying to save and make it. A. Meals-- I buy cheaper meals most nights now and something that is large enough for leftovers. I simply add new things to it the next night to make it different. Examples. ~~ 1. chili one night the next add potatoes , corn, and mushrooms. eat with tostitoes instead of crackers. .. ```2. Mashed potatoes (homemade only) the next night have potatoe cakes.. .. ```3. Hamburger helper the next night add vegetables and some durkee fried onions to the top or cheese. .. B. Electric-- People in my house have light patrol now :)).. Cut off those lights and tv when not in use! Also unplug items you do not use that often-- like can openers, mixers, coffee pots, toasters, stereos, tread mills, etc...... .. C. I buy more off brand items now than I ever did. Some work just as well!! This may take some time to find out which off brands are best. EX. some cheaper dish detergents are cheaper, but it takes twice as much. Hence- this is not really cheaper. Remember what works for some might not work for you as everyone's water is different. I use less of products now where it can be. like clothes! I grew up washing dirty muddy and greasy mens clothes. Now it is just me and my 3 girls. .. D. Instead of expensive exfoliants and toners .. Research natural home cures. Ex. baking soda and oatmeal with dab of water is a perfect exfoliant. Toner lemon juice w/some water. Make your hair shine -- pour a beer in it once a week. or conditioner mayo and egg let dry then wash!. .. E. Buying used stuff---- incredible savings!!!!!! Yard sales, 2nd hand stores , etc.... .. F. Also there is a site called Freecycle. Check to see if there is one in your area. Give and receive items I normally would throw out or give to salvation army or Goodwill now I put on free cycle place the item outside and let someone come pick it up. .. G. This is an old old trick. Flushing your toilets. People way back mainly had wells not public water which you don't pay monthly (unless you have to get a water system of course). Now most people have public water and are charged for this every month. Place a brick or two or a plastic container filled with water in the tank of your commode (do not let it touch or interfere with the flushing devices though).. This still allows your commode to flush accurately , but saves on water. If it does not flush properly make sure it is not touching any of the devices. If it is not , then the item used is to large and not allowing enough water to come in so find something smaller. (every time you flush you use 5 gallons of water that YOU are paying for and that much water in not necessary to flush correctly) .. Remember--in case some don't know this. Some cheap cleaning and deod. `Clear` vinegar, lemon juice, bleach, baking soda, and peroxide. Baking soda` baking soda` and more baking soda!! clothes , pots and pans, drain cleanser overnight, scrubbing agent (some surfaces), deod. teeth (one to two times a week only). nothing to help with economical, but drinking through a straw helps with staining and keeping teeth cleaner! Hope this helps !

Eat a nice meal before you go to the grocery story. Empty tummies make you impulse shop. I limit myself to one treat and the other things are functional. I don't do hamburg, hot dogs etc and I don't buy cheap fast foods. I can make a lean roast go for several meals, so actually in the long run, I find it cheaper. Get creative with leftovers, some meals like beans actually taste better the second time around. Soups are great if you add to the mix. I have bought better power lite lighting but I don't stay in dim lighting because I find it makes me depressed. Then I will spend more. I would rather shut the lights right off or snuggle in a blanket with the heat down and then walk places for transportation. As long as things like these are a choice, I feel good about my new life style and can find out that new things do happen, sort of like turning of the television and putting on some candles while having a conversation. Modern life can make things hum drum actually, so by doing new things, we have set aside as old fashioned, but are more cost effective they can be made new again and actually be delightful. You don't even think about the reason for doing it to save. You are not doing it to save money, except in the beginning, but doing something different because you like life that way. - works for me. Hope that helped someone in some small way.

Definitely, old lifestyle = less stress and calming serenity and most important more one on one family time. Like going to a park and taking a long peaceful walk instead of spending 30.00 on a movie and we are totally quiet and no interaction. healthier and bonding and cost nothing, but the gas to get there Depression uhhhggg I have an issue with that as well so actually for me-- cutting the lights off helps because I open the window and the shade and let the fresh air and SUN in. Get me some fresh bright flowers even if fake and place in certain rooms. Put some of my favorite smells (vanilla, lemon, fresh rain oils, etc. on my cold light bulbs, stove top burners, air filters ac/heat. so when I cut them on the smell comes out). Sunshine and fresh air is a wonderful and very helpful with depression and anxiety!. Thank you for your time and suggestions! Laugh every time and as often as you can a day. Sets off natural endorphin --good for your mental health. Keep smiling! Trisha.

Glad to share!! Hope you enjoy and save some money. I also sprinkle some baking soda (just a little) on my filters. And you can also put dabs of scented oil on them to blow through your duct system. :))

Good idea? Don't laugh I am serious. Jimmy Johnson needs to win the next Nascar Championship Race in an electric powered stock car. You guys need to be less dependent on oil. Rising oil prices mean higher prices on products and yes companies end up passing that on to the consumer like you and me. The solution: create new jobs for people to design, develop and build fast, cool, sexy, electric or whatever cars better and cheaper than anyone else in the world. Do not try to dump your old Fords on to someone else but get/help Ford to build even better cars. Think about the future and specifically the future for the children. It does not make sense to build a more robust economy if in doing so the climate changes so much that no one is able to enjoy life. Build an economy that is determined to find solutions and meet the challenges ahead. Yes, you need to get people back to work in the good old U s of A first then help other countries build their economy too and work together for a more positive future. That is the proud America I have seen in the past and it can be still. We all are in transition and need to make adjustments, we just need to make the right ones, I think. I'm not really sure about companies. A company that is now in business gives out points for rebates. You can fly to a new place or buy a new product with the points. They can or have the potential to look at other companies selling you products and reward the consumer with points on the good, caring, trusting, best, and fair gold star companies but do not list the corrupt ones. That way the consumer gets a good buy or return for their buying choice and the poor companies get weeded out for everyone's benefit. Well, maybe this is not just my idea but it is an idea. What do you think?

I'm in the Philippines and buying used stuff is rather common. I know some people who can't stomach purchasing pre-owned items but I have no problem with it. You can really get good things very, very cheaply. I got me a wooden bookshelf for 100 pesos (less than 3 dollars.)Something similar costs more than ten times or even fifteen times of that. A money-saving scheme I'm doing now is that I'm feeding my cats wet cat food mixed with rice. They eat their meals heartily all the same. And besides, they are Filipino cats, and cats here usually eat rice enyway. I have so far reduced my cat food expenses a great deal. Also, instead of buying dry cat food in supermarkets, I but in pet feed stores by the kilo so I also save a lot. It's also a common practice in the Philippines to dilute dishwashing liquid in water. I dilute a 10ML sachet of dishwashing liquid in a 330ML bottle of water and it lasts more than a week. Even though it's diluted in water it's still very good to use in washing dishes.

Oh yeah just recently my boyfriend and I were looking at these cute colorful mouse toys for the cats but decided against buying them since they cost 66 pesos (about $1.50) and that's enough money for one person's meal. We went home and he tied a piece of ribbon to the window grills and the wind blew it in all directions. The cats knocked themselves out trying to chase it and we knocked ourselves over laughing. We saved money and we(and the cats) still had fun.

Yes, some people do not like buying pre-owned items. I do not have a problem with it at all. Everything you purchase can be sanitized cheap and easily! Love the idea with the animals feeding. I have cats and one dog. This will def. be a Huge help to me. I often feel bad because now with the economy and cut hours at work I cannot spend on my animals as I use to. I always make sure they have enough food and water of course , but have cut down on treats and toys. Also have less trips to the vets unless needed. Thanks a lot. money I save on food maybe I can spend on some treats for them now. I will definitely try that with the dish det. as well. Thanks, Trish

I live in a third world country where my salary is ridiculously low if I would compare it to your standards. But this does not give me an excuse not to save anything from my pay. My hubby and I started first with a coin bank. In my country we have ten and five Peso coins and both of us were required to put in thirty Pesos (a little over sixty cents) per day. Both of us had an agreement that we could not give an excuse not to put in anything. What resulted is that everytime our funds are running low and payday is still a few days away, we borrow money from the coinbank . Which is actually better than borrowing money from someone else. After a few months, we soon increased the amount of what we had to put away each payday. This time it was five hundred pesos (around twelve dollars) each payday. This new savings has actually given us a reasonable amount to start investing in stocks and put away some money in the bank and plan for setting up a business. When you really want to save, you can think of a lot of ways to do so.

I used to keep a coin bank as well, and I put in only 5 peso coins. My rule was that every five peso-coin I get as change would have to go to the coinbank. A year late, the coinbank money took me on a trip to the island of Cebu. Since I started having a bank savings account, I already stopped using coinbanks. Maybe I should do it again.

Good discussion. Here are my points: 1. Use an ink pen instead of gels or ball points to save money and reduce plastic. 2. Buy groceries for a month in advance to save on fuel and transportation costs. 3. Buy items in large packages which actually cost less than a number of small packages of the same item. 4. Rice flour can be used to make a number of dishes- refer the net for recipes, they are not only healthy and filling but very cheap too and less time consuming. 5. Use cfl bulbs instead of ordinary bulbs. 6. Do not see junk programmes in TV, instead listen to soothening melodies in your music system and engage in hobbies like crafts which you can also sell online or offline nad thus make money. 7. refrain from buying and eating junk food like sodas or colas because they are harmful to halth and pocket- try to drink fruit juices like apple, pomegranate, orange etc; which are good for body. 8.Try to eat vegetables and sea food more bcause B vitamins eaten from middle age onwards will prvent memory loss in humans.
