I don't have this, but I've had others in my family who did. Ouch!! I think one thing would be to not 'overuse' the muscles in your jaw. There's lots of things we all do that could aggrevate it and make the pain much worse. Avoid sticky and chewy type foods, cut your food into smaller pieces if it needs a lot of chewing, eat more softer food choices. I think avoiding chewing gum would be wise as well. Don't chew pencils, clench your teeth, or grind your teeth..often these are unconscious habits and we don't even realize we're doing them! Do you grind your teeth while you're sleeping? They have those things at the pharmacy that you put in while you're sleeping to keep a person from grinding their teeth (ask the pharmacist, not positive, but maybe wearing those when at home and alone might help too?) When you yawn, it's often impossible not to open wide, so if you feel a yawn coming on, place your fingertips where the jaw 'joints' are and press, that will put some light pressure on the muscle while it's moving your jaw and maybe ease the discomfort some. Have you tried gentle exercizes to stretch the jaw muscles? If you gently stretch them and massage them, then they're not so tight and may ease the pain. (Just like when we run and get leg cramps from tight muscles in a way...if you know what I'm meaning:-) How about ice packs, or warm moist heat? Sometimes one, or the other, will help relieve pain. I'm hoping you've been to an orthodontist, or a dentist, since a lot of it is often from bad bite (where the teeth don't line up correctly anymore.) Lastly, I just found a forum with lots and lots of tips from TMJ people, maybe that will help you too: http://www.myhomeremedies.com/topic.cgi?topicid=1173 Wishing you a pain free day!!
