I was victimized by this scammer who posted job at Odesk. On the job description, it says that he needed a person who will convert a file to PDF format. So I applied with this job and after few minutes I received an email from him and saying I have to download a certain software and follow the instructions given after downloading which I did. But after that, I noticed that the job was not a PDF converter but a captcha encoder. He gave me his personal email address to ask for payment but when I emailed him, my email bounced back saying that the email address was not registered. Though I doubted him, I still tried to do the captcha encoding and suddenly I received an email from Odesk saying that the position I applied was deleted. Then I realized Odesk is not safe from scammers. Have you experienced this or familiar with it? Thanks in advance.

I was a victim of such like scam in freelancer, I thought Odesk is somehow safer for online workers. What I know is, we are never safe from scam. Playing along with them is just a waste of time. Nowadays, I only go for employers who have good rating, most of them are genuine but not easy to get a chance working with them.

I guess this was a lesson to learn for me. Never get easily believe in Data Entry jobs and catcha encoding though it is posted at Odesk or any freelancing sites. Thanks everyone.

You are right, we are never safe from scam. Most data entry jobs are posted by scammers, so I try to avoid those kind of jobs.

I have also noticed that, most scams don't work directly with the site but they just post a link to download a software to work with, do they pay anyway? I haven't worked with them till pay day, I'm just curious.

Even though Odesk is not safe from scammers, but at least they do act fast when they spot a scam. I think Odesk is much more safer to work on than any other freelance sites. No, I have never experienced working for a scammer before but I have seen a few scammers on such sites, and I immediately reported it to the Admin of the site.

Yes, they did informed me as well as the other applicants that they deleted the job post because of inappropriate activity. Good thing Odesk also emailed me the same day and I am happy that they did act faster than I expected. I never blamed Odesk for it because they are also not safe from scammers.

I think these scammers would grab any opportunity they can to scam people.

I have not experienced in such site. May be, I never trust those downloading assignment anymore and I never have a chance to be trapped. From my understanding, these people will offer us the free downloading movies and songs. At the same time, other spywares will enter our computer to monitor and steal our bank account information and so on. Few of these people were caught as reported in our local newspaper. They worked internationally. About your case, I hope you should check your computer again and again to ensure no other spyware inside and no fraud cases later.

You know it really bothers me. I just hope that the ones I downloaded was not a spy-ware because I usually do bank transactions online. Those people are unfair, fooling others for their own sake.

I also hope that the software that I downloaded was not a spy-ware or virus because I only borrowed the laptop of my sister and she might be angry if her laptop will be messed up.

Hello, junmae! I am sorry to hear that. It's good that you posted this experience. This is a big help especially for me who is just planning to sign up in Odesk. I read that you also need to check the employees's ratings and comments to the employers. You also need to ensure that the payment method of the employer is verified. It is very important. I think in your case, the payment method is not verified by Odesk. Am I correct?

Yes, I did not check if the employer has a good reputation that's why i got victimized. Anyway, there are still lots of good employers there so give it a try.

Odesk is a good freelancing site compare to others. But it is not completely safe from scammers but they do act fast.

Thank you for informing us this junmae. I got an account there in Odesk this year only, but I have not tried working with the available employers there. I got hooked up by one of my previous clients, so I did not have the opportunity to work there. That is really sad to know as I am really convinced and assured with the security of Odesk, but right now, I got the impression that even in Odesk, scammers can still propagate. I just really hope and pray that you will be able to find a legitimate employer. I hope those scammers will somehow feel some conscience in their heart of deceiving innocent people. Take good care and GOD bless.

Finding a legitimate employer online is very hard nowadays because scammers are more numerous than legit employers. But I'm not losing hope in finding a good one. Though Odesk was entered by such one, I am still a loyal member because I saw how they protect the members.

Online is filled with scammers and while working we have to be very much careful working with others and shouldn't download anykind of things as those may contain spywares and trojans.

Hey there! Hope you are doing well. I do believe there are some good freelance jobs out there. It just hard to find any decent job. That's why I would look at company profile or feedback's first when applying for jobs. Probably that odesk employer was a new person scammer. I just recently applied for a data entry job..Someone posted about data entry and then he send me a message. He said here - go to AWSurveys...he's posting about data entry and gives me a get paid survey site.. Then a few hours or minutes later. I got a notification that my application from that person was declined and the reason was inappropriate job posting. I guess some reported not appropriate job posting..It's good thing i get those notifications to be aware of what's good and not good. I had similiar situation. I guess Odesk is finding out about scammers because they do delete those not appropriate postings.

Hello Junmae, I was also a victim of a scammer before. I once worked in a forum and they made me a moderator. They promise to pay me, unfortunately all of a sudden they sell the website without informing me. I did not get anything from then. Now i just built my own website so nobody will scammed me and the earnings will be solely for me.
