I am not having much conversation in the Quilting category so I thought I'd try here...Do any of you quilt? I have a question...why are "fat quarters" so expensive? I mean 10 inch squares are $3.00 each! I know fabric has gone sky high, but watch a sale and get it cheaper. I just bought Symphony Broadcloth for $1`.99 a yard, regularly $4 a yd or higher. But it was on sale for $1.99 a yard so I bought 3 yards of every color (solid) that they had! Now I am set for solids, but need prints!
So I was looking at fat quarters..a.nd they are just to high for me to buy. So anyone know why they are so high? or where you can buy them cheaper? Or have any other quilt comments or suggestions?

I know what you mean and at our local shop they say it is because it takes them time and energy to cut them.
I asked becasue I was confused why the scrap ends and left overs that could be bigger or about the same size as a fat quarter where so much less. That's what I buy when there is something I like in the box. I usually check it when ever I am there. The Jelly Rolls too are an absurd price. i had looked at them because I really hate cutting all those strips but love to use them. When I saw what they where charging for then I balked! I used to sell them on Ebay a few years back, usually for $1.50 each and people ate them up. Our store sells them for $4-5 each! They are usually Moda but still sheesh.

THey are really expensive. I don't know how people can afford quilting. I am working on a table runner and have to have a template that cost $25! I can't afford on item for one project at that price!

Because it has come back as a fad hobby so they mark everything up. I make my templates now. If you buy a pack of Transparency film that can be printed on. Then I print out the size and shape I want and just print it out. This is great for kaleidoscope quilts I have found. This is my new trial and I am loving it. Will post a picture when I am done. Still cutting right now!

I thought of cutting one out but I am not that sure of myself on measurements etc. That roller wheel for cutting is the greatest thing created since sliced bread! I like the templates that are thick plastic and clear with all the measurements. I am just not that sure of myself yet to do one with paper. Do you know the difference between a Starmaker 8 template and any other brand? Or if another one will work? I am working on a table runner and it requires cuts using that template, but I am not paying $25 for it as I might not use it again. I was wondering if there was another brand that might be cheaper or maybe just another kind of template.

Yeah, but still...I did the math and 18x22 is the normal size...that isn't even half a yard! IWhat if you need more than that of one of the patterns? I dont' know. Just not a way that I can afford to go, so guess it doesn't matter the "whys". I'll just have to do what I can afford.
