Is God Vengeful?

"God keeps a track of every sin and pays people back with eternal punishment in hellfire." "God punishes sinners with natural disasters." I heard many people say things like these, are these true? Do we worship a God who is cruel to torture imperfect humans? The Biblical book of Deuteronomy 18:10-12 states " There should not be found in you anyone who makes his son or daughter pass through the fire....That is something detestable to God" That was a instruction from God, so his followers would not do anything like that, which was practiced by people of other nations that time. The very idea of eternal torment is repugnant to God, how can he actually burn people in hellfire? Also, we need not to serve God out of morbid dread of punishment, but out of love for him. Natural disasters, which destroy indiscriminately, are not acts of God but, rather, unforeseen occurrences that can effect anyone-Ecc 9:11. Conclusion: God is not vengeful, but always ready to forgive (PS 86:5). Drawing close to God will actually help us to know him better and understand him.

Indeed The God always play on two different sides. He could be cruel to his servants that fight and did not adhere to all His policies. On the other side, He can act with full loving and very close to His servant who submissive, obedient and always follow what be His instructions. Don't doubt about the nature and the power of God over us. As His servants, we have only one option, that is to worship, submissive and obedient to Him

I agree with you totally on this one. God has made very clear all of his statutes, all the rules and guidelines for righteousness. For those who heed God's voice, they are God's followers and He considers them to be within His fold. For those who has refused and has chosen to follow the path where he finds happiness for himself, they are God's enemies as they belong to satan's fold. Let us always remember that there are only two forces, major spiritual forces, where we may belong to. Either we choose to be with God or else, we shall belong to satan. The choice is yours. This is where we shall put into action our free will.

Isn't life much more than Good, evil, punishment and reward??? Isn't there much more really going on here??? You are right about one thing. Those who say God is vengeful, simply do not know God. There are much much better ways to handle wayward children that fry them for eternity. People like using hell to scare others into believing their way. Fear has always been a tool some have used to influence others.

Thanks for reminding of the scripture in Deuteronomy 18. God is not cruel, and He definitely is not torturing anyone but teaches us like a good Father. " 7 As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father? 8 If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all. 9 Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever?[g] 10 For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness. 11 No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way."Hebrews 12 (New Living Translation)

Sure! and buenavida, thank you for quoting those scriptures. God is definitely like a loving father who loves us more than our parents do and he will want us to have the best.

Hi keep onwatch, I agree with you all the way.Our Mighty Creator holds no vengeance against any living being. Its the universal law of sow and reap that applies. What goes around, comes around. Like a boomerang our good and bad deeds will come around to haunt or bless us. God is merciful to even allow us to harvest the bad fruit from the bad seed.

Becaus if you sometimes think you go bad and God fengeful, it not tru, you just receive a fine for my sins Because you and I need take responsibility about all bad what you do. And I never thinked thad God is vengeful, because God is right and he never pay bad with good... We need just live good and don't do bad things other people or animals...

Yeah God always gives us a chance to come into his fold, and we should understand that all he wants is for us to know him and walk in his ways.

God knows how to punish and God knows how to take his revenge upon those who do not heed His teachings and warnings. It is sad that I am not good at citing the biblical verses which will support this observation of mine. These are written in the bible. There is another one akin to this. All of God's people will not take revenge in their own hands for God will do it for them. God wants all of His people to be meek and forgiving for God will fight their fights and take into His hands their wars. This is written in the new testament. The old testament has it differently...something to the effect of 'an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth.' This is because, in the new testament it is love and magnanimity which is being taught by the Lord Jesus Christ. All throughout the bible, God asks us to heed all of His teachings, His laws, His rules and regulations. All has been made clear to us so that we can be fully guided through life as we tread this world for our lifetime. God imposes discipline among His people. Those who do not heed His voice are considered to be His enemies. God is love but, if you are not a part of God's people how can you feel it in its totality If the bible talks about how God will punish non believers and evildoers, believe every word written because. everything was written with a purpose.

For goodness sake that is load of nonsense written by men for political reasons to try and keep control of people. Okay a few thousand years ago when men did not know how these things happened but in this day and age

Hi keep on watch: From my point of view is not like being vengeful but to be fair. God is fair and if you don't want to be with him he won't force you to be with him. So for me, the so called "punishment from God" is not a violent action but the result from our wrong decisions and God who knows it all will judge our actions, our intentions and our personal circumstance. Noone but God knows what is really in our hearts. ALVARO

Hi keep_onwatch! I agree with you, I believe that God is not vengeful. I strongly believe that He is more compassionate, understanding, forgiving, and patient because He is love. He embodies the word. If I were to define love I would say Love is God and vice versa. In my experiences in life, God never failed me. He is my rock, my anchor when I am in the midst of darkness. I cannot see Him but I feel His love and His presence every day. I am not perfect and I have sinned but He is always there ready to embrace me when I ask for His forgiveness. I can say that God is a very loving God. He loves us very much that He gave us the freedom to choose, to sin or not to sin. He loves us so much that He gave His only son to be crucified in the cross and save us from our sin. I am a child of God and my Father is the best and perfect Father in which I owe my life.

Honestly I do not believe in god but it is said that (If he exists) he forgives it if you feel the guilt and try to apologise to the person and make it right for him/her.

Unfortunately, the justice of God is known only to him, we are the ones that find all about this ways some time later, as always happened. God can be loving and tolerant, and vengeful. Most was preached in the world, tolerance and love that came with the New Testament, Old Testament preached revenge. there are described the fierce acts of the God, and comfort of its subjects. Even David's psalms subtly demand vengeance from God. However, to resolve all conflicts, tolerance and love is important. If, however, an extraordinary problem encounters , then we have the right to ask from God to make us right with much love.
