Adding weight to Great Dane

Our Great Dane - A picture I took one day of our Great Dane. Just standing there I think he knew I was taking a picture of him, and he decided to calm down as I took the snap.

So here is a picture of our Great Dane. He's a big dog and like some of the information I find online. I understand that this large breed type of dog may have many problems with things with his health like; hip dysplasia, bloat, heart disease, tumors and tail injuries. Besides being a monster and eating a lot. I am starting to wonder what kind of things can be added to the diet to help him gain & keep weight on? I was thinking that we could buy bags of rice, boil the rice, and add it to his meal during his feedings. Besides that only thing I can think of is bread. Does anyone know of things we could add to his diet which will help put & keep weight on him?

Hello ShawnBob, Your dog doesn't seem thin to me. As long as he eats and makes no fuss about food, he will gain weight / maintain his weight as long as you feed him the proper amount of food. I think a good choice would be to feed him dry dog food special designed for large dogs. This way you'll know how much food to give him without the risk of changing him into an obese dog. As he is from a breed that may have problems with gastric dilatation, you should pre-soak the food in water for 30 minutes before feeding him. Also it is advisable to feed your dog smaller portions, two or three times in a day, instead of just one big meal a day. It is better to ask people who raise Great Danes for long about anything you want to know about your dog. You should give it a try here: http://dolforum.com/forum/

The best thing really is for you to consult a veterinarian. I think there will be free consultations if you try. An underweight dog may have some health issues like parasites and stuff. Make sure to always keep the dog groomed because just like humans, they tend to get ill more if their hygiene not that great.

Thanks. Yes I know that and we have plans on taking him to the Vet to be checked for worms and other parasites.
