Need some flirting help, some tips

I am not very good at flirting, i'm the shy type but trying to overcome that, and i can read body language well except when it comes in the form of someone being interested in me or flirting with me i have no clue. I don't want to just sit back and take the backseat waiting for someone to approach me and if i find someone i like i would like to be able to flirt to see what the response is and see if the other person is interested in me.
So, what are some tips for subtle flirting with a female?

Maybe you are just the kind of person who needs to start off just by starting a conversation and if all goes well you can start leaning the conversation more toward a flirtacous talk, maybe ending in asking her out. By simply havin a conversation you can find what interestes her and what kinds of things she likes so you can talk about that stuff as well.

It makes sense, the problem i always have is that when i am around someone i don't know my mind goes completely blank and i can never think of anything to say, but i guess in this case i could think of it as more of a questions to ask about the person to find out more about them rather than something to strike up a conversation
