Issues with last name

India

Though last name [also called family name, surname] are common, there are many instances that I know of, where people didn't have one and they realized its importance or need when applying for a passport. Its a must for passport & is very much necessary in many countries of the west. The other dimension of the last name is something that I learnt from a senior boss but like I was doing, many people make an incorrect usage. I was educated by my boss that the title [Mr/Mrs/Dr etc] is normally prefixed with the last name and never with the first name [that's the correct way, I learnt]. For example, if my name is James Alexander, I may either be addressed as James or as Mr. Alexander and never as Mr. James. The amusing thing is, particularly in India, people take offense if called by their first name without the title. They think it means disrespect. This is due to ignorance of the fact that if someone can call you by first name, he is informal and it is no offense to call by first name. If the other person is not close to me or friendly with me he would better call me as Mr. Alexander and not as Mr. James!! Have anything to say?

I've never heard of anyone without last names except of course with some celebrities like Prince and Madonna. Millions of people have the same first names and that's why last names are required. I'm guessing centuries ago last names were a way of recognizing which person was who. Cleopatra the VII? Jesus the Christ? kind of strange then but it just went on...developed into something easier ...but some people tries to get the old thing back like Jersey Shore's Mike The Situation. haha

@gicolet & @fazril It is true that due to multiplicity of first names, reliance is made on last name or family name as the distinguishing feature. Thanks both for participating.

If in India, the prefix is used with the first name, then that´s the way it is. It is an usage, not ignorance. The saying says "Do as Romans do". Every country has it´s customs and although your boss could have learnt that from the way it is said in England (or elsewhere), if you live in India, you abide by the way it´s done there. I have traveled a lot. If I had taken my costums everywhere and looked down on the way other people live and speak, I would not have learned anything and all would have been very dull. I´d advise that you do it your boss´way when with him and your friends´ way when with them.

Yeah, people use father's name or name of their birth place or name associated with traditional occupation as last names. Glad you like the information. Thanks
