South Park did a spoof about The Church of Scientology a few years back. This angered members included celebrity members, such as Tom Cruise and John Travolta.
It now has come out from a former member that Scientology began to covertly investigate the creators of South Park including their friends. The Church was trying to get some dirt on the creators of the program. so as to "expose" them and get back at them.
The Church of Scientology is very controversial and has its share of critics. Of course, probably most "religions" do.
But it seems that Scientology goes after its critics and enemies most severely.

I have a hard time understaning Scientology. I just don't get it. From what I have read, it seems like a cult.

Scientology claims that it is a religion. Others see it as a cult. One person's religion is another person's cult or vice versa.
Germany has said that it believe Scientology is an organized crime enterprise and once banned it. I do not know if it is still banned.
There is a lot of controversy surrounding Scientology but they seem to be very successful and a wealthy "religion".

Hi bostonphil
I agree with you; most (if not all) religions have critics. Almost anything can and does have them. Just about anything that a person is not a part of or does not understand is a potential target of criticism.
I don't think that art (which South Park is) should be investigated by anyone for their portrayal, either positive or negative. South Park also makes references to Jesus, but I still watch the show, and I am Christian.
The Venus de Milo is art, it's naked from the waist up, but you don't see it displayed with a covering on it. We generally don't stymie art to fit a purpose.
Basically if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen!

The Church of Scientology is not known for having a sense of humor when others criticize or make fun of it. South Park spoofs all kinds of persons and groups and things. That is the nature of the show. I think it woulds have been more productive and better public relations if Scientologists could laugh at themselves and enjoy the show.

Agreed. Scientologists have the right to freely practice their faith. Others have the right to criticize them for their beliefs.
But just because someone does not agree with your or pokes fun of you does not give you the right to cause those persons harm.
You may not like someone poking fun of you or your beliefs but that is their right.

This information has recently come out from a former member who is disillusioned with Scientology. I guess we do not really know if it is true and /or maybe they never found any "dirt".

It would serve no purpose because no one would really care what they dug up. South Park is makes fun of everyone, and South Park fans don't seem to me like the type of people to stop watching because a butt-hurt religious fanatic pulled the creators skeletons out of the closet.

As I have said, The Church of Scientology would probably have more friends and fans and less critics if they learned to laugh at themselves. There is also nothing to stop them from doing a comedy routine about South Park and the creators of South Park. all of us need to stop taking ourselves so seriously and to learn to laugh at ourselves.
Scientology has a bad reputation of going after those who they see as enemies.

Right. Expose Parker and Stone. Because they take themselves so seriously. Good luck with that.

The Church of Scientology has a long and questionable history of going after its critics. I think The Church should lighten up some and learn to laugh at itself. Then, it might not have so many critics.

I don't think that the people in the Church of Scientology understand that South Park makes fun of everybody, that's just what they like to do.

It is probably an honor to be made fun of on South Park. I think the Church of Scientology would have done well to laugh at themselves.

Then they have made it! They are a true religion. It is the 21st century! They can't have heretics killed like the good old days. All they can do is discredit them.

Religion is a very interesting subject. I am always amazed at what is done in the name of God or or religion.
The killing of persons who believes differently or does not believe continues to this day.

Scientology is a body of beliefs and related practices created by science fiction and fantasy author L. Ron Hubbard (1911–1986), starting in 1952, as a successor to his earlier self-help system, Dianetics.[4] Hubbard characterized Scientology as a religion, and in 1953 incorporated the Church of Scientology in Camden, New Jersey.
Scientology teaches that people are immortal beings who have forgotten their true nature. Its method of spiritual rehabilitation is a type of counselling known as auditing, in which practitioners aim to consciously re-experience painful or traumatic events in their past in order to free themselves of their limiting effects. Study materials and auditing courses are made available to members in return for specified donations.[9] Scientology is legally recognized as a tax-exempt religion in the United States and some other countries, and the Church of Scientology emphasizes this as proof that it is a bona fide religion.
If South Park disrespect them they should ask for a excuse, because everubody have to respect the beliefs of the others.

The "church" actually spent the money to hire private investigators to follow Matt stone and trey Parker around to find something that could use to black mail them with. Ultimately, they found nothing. I actually just watched this episode today. One of my favorites
