Welcome to myLot! 
I do see that many have provide you with some helpful tips. I wanted to add that when you do start discussions that you do keep in mind that we do not earn for the efforts of others. In other words when the responders respond with quality responses they are earning as they are typing.
You do not earn for their responses. You will earn more when you come back and comment back to the responders. Though it is not compulsory to respond to all, just in keep in mind that you are not earning unless you are commenting. Here on myLot you only earn for quality you participate/type with.
As a new member sometimes it is helpful to respond to others discussions until you get the flow of things.

There is a phrase that the long time veterans use here and I find it so appropriate:
I earn for what I type and you earn for what you type!
These words will help you a great deal as if you look at the words next to the participation box it says:
"Please be as descriptive as possible." That in itself is saying that quality is important. Combine the two to get to the conclusion of all your participation and you will do well here. What I learned during my time is to enter discussion I am interested in, with the mindset as if it were a conversation and that will allow the earnings to flow.

I think we have the same doubts about how this it works and if it is real.
but the best think is we can enjoy to do think that we like, read post that is interesting for us and discussion that we know about for to give them a good point with a high quality.
I think this can be the "first" recipe for us. We almost started this in the same time, hope in the future (not to far..lol) we can share our experience and to say that it works for us or not!!
