Mailing lists will help in earning more?

Hi friends,
I have more than 100 friends in my Facebook account and lots of mail addresses in my mail account as well. I have been reading about the importance of mail lists for growing business. I do not have a site that actually sells anything. I have a blog for entertainment news only. But it's doing good. I want to increase the reader base now. How will these Facebook friends and mail addresses help me in doing so?
Please help.

Why dont you ask your facebook friends to give the link to your blog to other friends?
I dont know about mail addresses. If they are strangers then you may be guilty of spamming them.

Hi,
As I said, they are all my friends in the list - in FB. So that is why there is no question of being strangers or spamming. I don't have any products to sell but I just want to send them links whenever I post a new article. That's the only point I am talking about. I would like to have an experience of this work too. If it works, then I may increase my readers. That's all I am targeting at present.
How about mailing them the link in their mailbox through my mail account? Sounds bad

to send them link in their mailbox I guess what you have to do is to have their subscribe to your feeds ^^ but some won't actually have interest on that otherwise they are into reading articles and blogs.

I think a list works better if it's targeted rather than random. For instance, if you had 100 people on your blog give their email address to you because they love Bollywood, that's really good...you can send them an update when you make a new post about Bollywood or start a new site they might be interested in or know a good deal for DVDs or posters. A list of 100 random people isn't as good...they might not be interested in the contents of your blog and because they didn't choose to be on the list they may resent getting this kind of promotional contact from you.

Yeah, if you email your list too often it will annoy the subscribers and they may leave the list (or worse report your messages as spam). You don't have to send an email out after every post; maybe just pick and choose the best ones that you really want to promote.

That sounds like a good idea. You CAN automate the whole process, but that'd be like the people adding themselves to your list would be subscribing to an RSS feed of your blog by email. I think it's better to pick and choose what you really want to promote to your list.

If I have the option of sending the mails that's well and fine. I thought it was an automated process where the mail will be sent irrespective of your approval. Thanks for the important info. That will allow me to handpick the articles that I want to really send. Around three times a week should be fine with a couple of news items only. What do you think?

Building email lists is the basis for direct sale or affiliate marketing. That's what all those so-called gurus keep pushing on their "Earn $63,000 in a month" scams: list-building.
The basic idea is that you farm emails, then spam the crap out of everybody with an autoresponder. If you have 50,000 people on your list and 0.01% buys something in each mail, that means 5 sales per email.
I'll stop talking about that now because I hate that kind of marketing and everything it stands for.
On a more reasonable note, a subscription email list is a good thing if they're voluntary subscribers - you can send notification when you update your pages, you can tell them about what's going on and you can ask for feedback. I have one for my new book (the usual "sign up for updates" thing) that I manage through MailChimp (free, but no free autoresponder).
We're talking about 8 people at the moment and I have absolutely no intention of abusing their emails but they'll be a useful pool for opinions, to offer freebies to in return for feedback, that kind of thing.

Hello and sorry for the late response. Well, you know about my blog almost everything as you had given some suggestions yourself. So that means, I am not selling anything as mine is a news oriented blog. Do you still suggest I can sell things related to the film industry like the CDs, DVDs etc?
Well, that is an option I am not seriously thinking about as yet.
Yes, I want voluntary subscribers and not the ones who are my friends and so they have subscribed etc. That has no point. The real traffic is the one that matters more. Please suggest me something from your side.

As far as my blog is concerned, you know it and you have seen it many times that it is not in WP but in blogger. But yes, your's is a nice opinion, no doubt.

Since you're not selling anything, you'd really just be trawling for traffic. That's fine, of course, but since you only want interested people and WP has a subscription option you could well be creating work for yourself with little point. You could spend that time on getting traffic through other means and just make the subscription option stand out on the site.
Just my opinion.

I think i would like to ask if these FB friends are real friends or are they just people you meet on the net?
Because i think the various categories of people would require different kind of marketing techniques

It can be done in this way too - ask them if they are interested in such kinds of news like the ones I write. Then they can be a sort of voluntary subscribers as well.

Wow my friend! sounds like you been doing a lot of work! Congratulations my friend, you're in the right path just keep doing so. I will love to have a mail addresses from my friend. What i recommend in doing so is to email them 2 or 3 times a week with something helpful. For example if your business is about losing weight you can send them very short emails with tittles like : 10 tips to lose stomach fat and then you give them 10 tips and at the bottom of the message put for more tips and such then recommend something on the will gain your profits.
You can also get more ideas about it in Warrior Forum just search at threads been posted there and you will get ideas how it works and such.
Good luck my friend and keep us updated how it goes!

Yeah thanks first of all for those encouraging words. Yes, I have been working hard, really hard on all these things. I am glad that you pointed out that I was on the right path. As a matter of fact, I have a blog about Bollywood news. So the content is always fresh. Thanks for giving me the name of the forum. I will check it out right away. And yes, I will most certainly inform if I get anything new or worth telling you all here.
Cheers

Yes, that is what social networking is all about. I am trying to get in constant touch with them and as you said, can also inform them whenever there's something new.

I am just yet thinking of using those friends as my referrals. I am yet not sure if they all will be there. But at least I have some names to work with. I am taking steps carefully so that it may not give a negative result in the days to come.

Hi abhi, you can check out my blogsite which can be found on my profile here. There is a box on my sidebar that's named networked blogs. It can also be accessed in facebook and if you register your blog in it, you have the option to make your new blog entry automatically posted in your facebook and twitter account.
