Don't you just hate it when people are literally standing in your way?

I went out this afternoon and as I was walking on my way, I encountered two people standing in the pathway and blocking my way. It's really annoying when people are so mindless and uncaring. They stand there as if they own the way and it's like they don't realize that it's a public place where people walk back and forth in it.
I mean, it would have probably mattered to me differently if the pathway was wide enough for three to or more people but it was only wide enough for two and these people chose to stand in it in the middle so you can't really pass through unless they move aside.
So, no matter how I want to be respectful and patient of people all the time, there are just these circumstances when my patience fails and I sarcastically say "excuse me" with an obvious annoyance in my tone.

It is a bit annoying, yes, but I applaud your efforts to be civil. Sometimes I say something more direct than "excuse me" as it is those guys who should excuse themselves, so maybe I say "Do you think you could move aside so that I can get by" and do you know one jerk who was blocking the exit from a grocery store where I had just checked out DID mind and thought he could just stand there. I just pushed my cart toward him and told him as politely as I thought necessary that he must not block the exit. What nerve, lol.

I know exactly what you mean secretbear....people just stand there. I was on crutches while back and I swear...they see me that way, struggling to get through an isle or to the rack...and they just stand there! Or worse...they would ask ME to move so they could better get to where they wanted.
But worse...is dogs. THe owners have them on lease, but they don't make the dog move off the sidewalk when someone walks past. I lived at an apartment complex for seniors...I walked the walkway every day to go get mail. Someone would be coming toward me with a dog...did they rein the dog to their side so as not to take the entire sidewalk? No. Did they rein the dog to go off the sidewalk so I could walk past? No. Did they stop and hold the dog to their side while I walked by? No. KNow what they did? THey gave the dog MORE lease so the dog could run up to me and start sniffing my feet/legs and jump on me! And of course with the usual "Oh, she won't bite". Well, you know...dogs bite..that is their instinct and if they smell something odd or I make a sudden move;. they will bite simply out of their own defense! The movement scared the them so they react. That's what dogs do! But I'd step away and they'd let the dog follow! So I had to start saying..."please pull your dog back" as I stepped off the sidewalk into the grass or dirt! But one time...the person let the dog run up to me and I stopped and the dog LITERALLY hoisted its leg on my foot making ready to pee! I kicked the dog away and the owner says "why'd you kick my dog? He wouldn't bite you!" I said, "Good grief you idiot...didn't you see him hoist his leg up on me... he was going to pee on me!". The person says 'Oh, he wouldn't do that". I said "well what else does a dog do when they hoist a leg up on something? You keep your dog off me!" and I walked on. I had just had it after their last comment.
But with a person as you describe...I'll be nice to a point, but if they just push through, I will say..."well excuse you!". They look at me like a calf looking at a new fence... like,..."what'd I do? I always push through!"
Consideration is just in society anymore.

I like dogs but I wouldn't like them peeing in my leg, too! I would have kicked that dog, too! Good thing you gave the owner a piece of your mind.

She was totally shocked that I said that! I never saw her again after that, but others still let their dogs have leash. I move from that place and told the management why!

I always give people the benefit of the doubt, I have on occasion when talking to someone stopped in the middle of the way and carried on the conversation, sometimes being so engrossed that I did not realize until someone asked me to pass that I was a public nuisance, so I can be quite forgiving. If I find someone blocking the way, I will ask to pass once or twice, with the usual excuse me and thank-you if they allow me to pass. The thing is if they ignore me then I can be quite forceful and move past then thank them for allowing me to bulldoze past.

I admit that I do am sometimes block the way unknowingly but those will be at places like malls or groceries where you are stuck deciding which to buy or when you saw a friend and you started talking. But in a narrow road, I make it a point to be mindful of people walking through it.

That also bugs me. I think sometimes larger people also block the way...it's almost like being a bully! The worst I ever had was when I had a booth at a sale in a big city...and people would stand and talk so people couldn't get around my booth! I paid big money to be there...they were so thoughtless!

I would have asked them sarcastically if they're going to buy something from my booth.

I hate it when it happens on public transport on a very busy day! Even worse! When I try to get out of the train, I see these people making a human barrier between the exit and I just stand there waiting for them. When I hear the whistle, I know the doors were going to close so I just say excuse me and smash myself through them
Like you said, some people can be quite mindless and careless. What is even more annoying is when couples hold hands and their arms create a barrier. You can't walk pass them on their side and you can't even walk through them.
I just want to karate chop their hand holding and push myself through! I am always walking fast to my destination, I don't like slow walkers either, especially slow walking groups who walk in a big line. *sigh* @secretbear (19448)

Same here!!! I don't have patience for slow walkers! I always "overtake" them and if the road is narrow, I would say "excuse me" in an irritated voice.

yes yes, I hate it when I encountered such things. sometimes they were there and talking and literally ignore the fact that it was public place.
I wont blame you for having that kind of attitude in that case. because it is so damn annoyhing especially the pathway is narrow.
in my case, I have several times encountered situation like that and in my case, a group of girls where standing on the way,
even after I said "excuse me" in polite manner, they didnt move aside, instead of it, they kept talking. oh God. and I was really in hurry. I have to repeat several time to say "excuse me" before I End up literally increased my volume and tone level saying "you are all blocking the way, please move aside!"

I think you're more considerate for just voicing it out. Me, I would not only rudely ask them to move aside, I would also storm right through them, in the center!!!

well yes. especially if these people sure have an idea that they are standing on your way, right?! =) most often than not we get annoyed by them knowing or slightly having an idea that they are a disturbance than if they do not have a clue.

Especially in supermarket aisles. They stand chatting with their trolleys blocking the way. You wait, patiently, ready to smile your thanks when they notice you and smile their apology and move but that's not what happens!! They notice you and keep talking while they lean forward on the handle bars as if they are going to move on but they only move an inch or two. They don't actually move on till another shopper comes along then they give you a look as if to say..."How rude!"

Hi.. I have encountered this scenario. There are several small markets here where we can find so many people and just staring at the shops in order to decide which shop to enter. They would not mind that someone at their back is waiting to move forward in the crowd. I hate such irresponsible people!

Yes!! I agree and i understand!! What i hate most is people walking towards my direction, when the path is big enough for 2 people. When they are talking, they walk side by side towards me where i have no space
It's even worse when i'm out running, when my sweaty body knock against them, they would shout at me! I mean it's not my fault right? I would just point to them using my most powerful finger and carry on running.. lol

My husband was saying the same today. He said that there were loads of people just standing in the way in Asda as he was trying to get a few bits shopping, no matter what part of Asda he was in there they were all in the way.A few weeks ago i also went to Asda and even with me being in a wheel chair they seemed to just stand in the way, until one young lad spoke up and said to them to move out of the way.

I cam think of nothing that is more annoying to me than this. It usually happens to me in the grocery store. The one thing i need is out of my reach because someone will refuse to move to one side or another. If someone is standing in my way it makes just want to leave.1 person likes this

It does annoy me. I'll tell you what really is going to annoy me even more and that is people who give you a dirty look when you politely say, "excuse me", when you want them to clear your pathway. As if they are really going to be the ones in the right and I am the one who is in the wrong. It is rather unfortunate and not to mention rather agitating to see that these people are going to be the ones that are going to take a lot of offense.
So yeah these people who blatantly stand in the way, are a heavy annoyance when you really think about it. There are really going to be some people out there that are going to make me want to shake my head from side to side. And then you ask them to please move or excuse me, and they act if you are the one who is in the wrong. It is just something that completely and utterly baffles me but that's just people for you.

I have this same problem, there is an alleyway besides a secondary school which I use a couple of times of week and every time I find my way is impeded by pupils who stand in the way, huddled in crowds, quite intimidating, blocking the alleyway. Then there are teachers standing there too, all smoking! I am not a smoker and have to walk through all the smoke, do they not have any common sense that people need to walk through? How can the pupils not do this when they see their teachers doing the same? It is highly annoying and I dread it every time as they have made a few comments like it was me who was the inconvenience and not them. It's the attitude you get, I mean how dare I walk down a public alley asking them to let me pass?

Be careful Miss, that is a "modus operandi" of some pick-pockets. They intentionally block the way so that the pathway will be clogged by passing pedestrians, then some accomplices will "sneak-in" within the flock of pedestrians and try to pickpocket the poor victims. Be alert always.
