I am still young but I can say that I have a poor memory. Now I remember something, but after few minutes or hours, I will already forget the details. Last time, my colleague asked me how to go to a particular place. I have been there already but I forgot the name of the street. I also forget easily names of my students and I am quite afraid that it will give a negative effect on them.I am worried that I am suffering from a memory gap problem. Do you experience same? Do you easily forget details? If not, what do you do to have a sharp memory?

Yes! I do experience that also. I do tried to analyze my behavior about this. I found out that I am a very focused kind of person. I do focus on things that I want to focus on that I don't really put up with the other details of my surroundings. This make me forget the other things, but I can say I will never forget the details of the thing that I focused on.This is why, I don't remember directions pretty well too. I am focused more on the destination rather on how to get there stuff. Is this situation applicable to you too? I don't call this as memory gap. I just call this being over focused on certain things and being insensitive of the other details around. But I do feel that I should strike a balance between them. That is what I am trying to practice now.

Thanks for the participation. Can you tell me on what are those things you do to balance yourself with different things. Good for you that you remember the place. There are times, I can remember the place and there are times I cannot. What I just remember is what I did there. However, I can remember the place and how I have been there, but after few days or months, I cannot recall it anymore.

Well, to balance out things, one should be sensitive of their surroundings. Being over focused tends to make you good on one thing only and bad on the other things. Being versatile and sensitive to other details other than the thing that you are focusing will surely balance out the way you think and will surely help your memory remember other details too other than what you are focusing on. Maybe, you are too focused on the activity that you did in that place that you overlooked the other details such as how to get into that place or where is that place. Is it that? As for me, I am now trying to be sensitive of my surrounding and try to loosen out a bit on the things that I focus on. I am always too tight before when I am focused on something. Also, being more observant with the surroundings and other people or places around will surely help.

Wow, it is good that you never forget you are married and you have a husband. It is funny but sometimes, people tend to forget they are already married. I say that because they still do things as if they are still single and tend to neglect that they have husband or wife and children to take care of.

I am really sorry for that...I have rough time that is why I cannot participate as much as I could and I can.
31 Oct 11
Oh! I think it's alright to forget your meals but hope it will not come up to the point of forgetting that you are married and have children to be taking care of. Because if that will happen? Your family is in pity and disaster.. Hope it won't happen to me..

Hi! It is very common thing not to remember many details. Our brain has limited capacity and it has not endless storage capacity, our brain remembers only important things and those things, which we want our brain to remember. Have you noticed that if you want to do a particular work, which is of great interest to you, you will not forget it, come what may? We forget only those things, which we do not want to remember. I also suffer from the memory lapses, as you have mentioned. I try to note down certain things so that I could recall those things through my written notes.

It is true that I can remember all those things that I want to remember like birthdays and other special occasions. I agree with you that we can remember anything we want to remember and can forget easily those things which is of not that significant to us.While I was reading this post, it suddenly reminds me of taking down notes so as not to forget things.

I am a senior citizen, in the 60`s but i still have a good memory. I can remember things i used to do and certain events as far back as when i was 4 years old. There are many things we can`t remember during the course of our lives but certain things stand out very sharply.I can remember lots of things which took place during my life and very clearly too as if they occured yesterday.I also don`t forget names of people or their faces even if i have met them once though now due to my ascending age sometimes there is a brief memory lapse but its temporary.

I also met some people who might be older than you and they have good memories. I envy them and I hope I can have strong memory just like them once I reach their age.

hi poniface, yes I think so that I must spend some time meditating as I observed that is has been a long time that I cannot pay much focus to some things. I did that last year and it was good. I have some health problems and a friend told me to try yoga. I don't know about that and he told me just to search it on youtube.

I don`t know what happend with my memory i`m not old i`m 20 years old, but in the last year maybe a little bit more i sence that my memory`s sharpnes is not so good any more. Sometimes i go to the other room and in the moment i go there i don`t remember for what or just when i`m gonna say somthing and i forget it. It`s not only this i sence that for me is more difficult to learn differetn things, because i`m in the university and i have problems with learning my lessons. I have no idea when and why that happend and i don`t know how to improve my memory to be as good as in the good old days. :)

While responding to the posted discussions here, I am thinking if our health has a relation with our memory. I am quite anemic and I am wondering if that has an effect on how we remember things. What do you think?

I think you are a busy person too like me. However, when it comes with meetings and seminars, I cannot forget it. If I have an appointment to one person, I will surely remember it. But when it comes to other things, I am very poor.

You are not the only one to have a short memory. Sometimes one recalls minor details, but occurred long time before, rather than recent things is easy to forget.

hello annie! i also have the tndency to forget the things that i must remember but then to fight this i usually write down a lot of notes and then review this at night so that mmemory is refreshed of what things i should remember at the end of the day. i recommend that you have a daily dose of vitamins too.

Thanks katrina. I will do my best to do what you said to me. However, I do not like taking up medicines or vitamins made from science. I want to do natural things that can help me with my memory like keeping diaries. I will be glad if you can tell me what foods to eat that will surely boost my memory. Thanks a lot!

Is it your poor memory or are you just not that interested in the daily info you get? Are you too busy with your own thoughts? How about your long term memory? I only remember things from my youtht/childhood which are mostly bad memories (from about 2 years old). As a kid I was great in remembering birthdays and phonenumbers, now I don't care about that anymore. I don't think I have a sharp memory for these kinds of things anymore, I also don't care. Everything I can find back somewhere is good enough for me. I have big memory gaps too, even if I try to remember the name or word I just heard and repeated some times (but still think it's because I am more interestend/busy with my other things/thoughts). How about you?

Well, in going to some important places, I tend to tell to myself how to go to that particular place. I keep on remembering the streets and landmarks. I can keep that in my mind for few days but after that, I will tend to forget it. I don't know why I cannot store that for a long time. Another thing was that when I caught my student cheating. After couple of hours, I can no longer remember how I caught him cheating. It like as if it was erased soon on my mind. That is one thing that gives me so much frustration.

I can say that my memory is still sharp.I can easily memorize numbers and scientific terms.Maybe it is because I am just sixteen. But I have some problems remembering where I put things at times.Maybe I am just careless.:)

That's a serious problem my dear, knowing that your a teacher. I think you should a take a memory enhancer. There's a lot of memory enhancer in the market today, you just choose what's best for you, you could consult a doctor first before doing so. So far, in my case I am not experiencing that.

Good for you my friend. However, I can consider those things which will not require me to drink any medicines as I came from serious illness. The doctors gave me so much medicines and the experienced was very bad that I refrained myself from drinking again any kind of medicine except herbal medicines.

Me too ! I am too young but at my age I'm thinking if sometimes I have this so called MEMORY GAP , There are so many things that I'm thinking off, I guess it was the reason why I easily forget something or anything . I just remember it now then later I'll forgot it already .I hate it when I misplaced my valuable things , such as my cellphone and money . I keep on loosing them because I forgot where did I placed them ! :(( .. what a mind !!

I am like that too especially if I have tons of things to do. I can say that I am very clumsy and because of that, I lose my things sometimes. Maybe I can do some yoga in order for me to have focus.

I don't have a good memory for everything, however I can remember a lot of things from my childhood and recall those things in tremendous detail when other people possibly wouldn't be able to remember things like that. With regards to names, I'm not too bad at that, but I have to work hard at things like exams when I have a lot of information to remember for them. Unfortunately though, the only way to get around that is to carry on with the work until you're 100% sure that you know everything. It takes a while, but I do think that it's worth it.

Yes, you are right! We have to work on things so we can remember it. We must give focus on it. Unfortunately, I think that I am still on the process of adjusting between my work and my study. There are times that I am very busy that I tend to make a bonding with my family and friends.

I have always been told that I have a very good memory, even as a child. I hope this is something that will always remain with me. A memory is something to cherish. Having a sharp memory will hold those memories in your life longer and that is a good feeling to have.

I am happy to hear that from you. Were you born with that gift? Or you are just working hard to maintain a good memory? I asked the second question as I am curious about things which I can do just to improve mine and also for the benefits of others who are suffering from that problem too.

In some ways I do, and in some ways I don't. My father has an extremely sharp memory. He always remembers everyone's names. I think I got that trait too, but my mind is so flustered and in the clouds sometimes that it effects my thinking ability. I've noticed on days where I'm really stressed out, I tend to forget less when it comes to everything. So as long as I have a clear head, I have a sharp memory! Unfortunately, my head isn't clear a lot! LOL

I can relate with that. Sometimes, it seems to me that I am a very disorganized person. When I speak, it is not clear and I think, it is because what is in my mind is not organize too.

I feel similar to you. I'm only 19 years old but my memory has been really bad for about a year or so now. I used to remember things, details, important things, little things that may be important just for the time being, but now I forget them minutes later. I've always been bad with remembering people's names but I'm worse than ever with that now, I always forget people's names and it's very bad when I need to learn a bunch of names all at once. I try to remember them all and find ways to remember them, but usually wind up forgetting over 90 percent of them.

That is a big problem to me. I wish we can both find ways on how to cope up with that problem. That is why I posted this discussion on mylot. I know that this will not give benefits to me alone but also for other people who has same problem as mine. Thanks for participating.

Even the young one's forget things around them. But it doesn't mean, you have a poor memory. I would say certain person think a lot of things, looses focus and take things for granted. Sometimes, me myself forgot details, too. What I am doing to minimize it is write it on a piece of paper. Like if your planning things for a that very day, write it on a piece of paper and make it your guide for that day's work completion. Post it on where you can easily and readily seen.

Maybe, it is because you know that the exam is very important. I am also like that too. Like what has been posted earlier, we tend to remember those things which are of importance to us and forget those which are of less significance.
