Now Look What They've Done

What would you get when a bunch of Iranian footballers started butt grabbing as a form of celebration in their local professional soccer league? On top of a $40,000 fine, the players responsible may each be given 74 lashes! Not forgetting, an indefinite ban which had already commenced. I really do not know what they were thinking of, going into this form of goosing especially when they are being both Iranians and Muslims. Have they forgotten their religious code and conduct to keep their hands to themselves or at least somewhere else? I could not help feeling sorry for them but I suppose the law is still the law which does not give anyone any exception. This is taking law a bit too far. 74 lashes is simply too much. If they are really convicted, then I can say they are taking things too far.

sjlskl, Since their ban, I believe the conviction is inevitable and would just be a matter of time to come. I cannot help feeling disgusted with such this event and sorry for the players involved. But, I suppose the law is the law and there is nothing to expect when the people in authority could be so discriminating and irregardless to freedom of uninhibited expressions.

My first impression on reading this query was what kind of celebration is butt grabbing. Then I saw the video and to be truthful could not find anything that was wrong or immoral there. Of course, one player did grab another players butt, but it looked very accidental to me. For the second goal, I did not even see any problem at all. If they are going to be fined and lashed for that, then I must say they should rather quit playing football in Iran!! Cheers! Ram

ram_cv, My exact sentiments. But, I don't think the players could have a choice in opting out to play soccer when it could be deem to be disobedience to their religious call to represent their team. I am sorry because if they (religious authorities) could pick out something from this simple expressive celebration, I do not think there would be actually any freedom of choice for playing. No offense as it is just my perception from this article.

Okay, I just watched the video a couple of times and I definitely don't see anything that should result in a $40,000 fine. The celebration that I saw there was a lot less than what we see at high school football games around here and the students are never fined for their behavior. I think that it is just wrong to issue that kind of a punishment to people for something that was really all in fun.

Islam has laws so strict that when a man looks at a woman in the eyes intently he can be punished by having his eyes removed and pulled out from its sockets. And when one is found guilty of theft, his hands (or perhaps fingers) shall be amputated. I may be wrong with the details but I'm generally close to the truth with what kind of punishments they give. People in the Iranian authorities uphold Islamic values and for them this public act of butt grabbing is unacceptable. We may not understand it but I suggest that we look at it not in our own shoes but in theirs instead.
