Yes, I know that for many of you this may seem a silly question, but there are people like me who still do not exactly know how to give a precise answer to this question. According to my point of view, there are 3 factors that affect the waves, and they are: 1) The wind 2) The marine currents 3) The phases of the moon That I have listed this is, as already said, just my opinion. I know that consulting on-line encyclopedia maybe find clearer answers, but do not exclude that one of you readers of my opinion, there may be someone can give me a precise explanation. Greetings

The wind The most common cause of surface ocean waves is air movement (the wind). Waves within the ocean can also be caused by tides, interactions between waves, submatine earthquakes or volcanic activity, and atmospheric disturbances (storms). Wave size depends on wind speed, wind duration, and the distance of water over which the wind blows. The longer the distance the wind travels over water, or the harder it blows, the higher the waves. As the wind blows over the water, it tries to drag the surface of the water with it. The surface water cannot move as fast as air, so the water rises. After it rises, the water is pulled back down by gravity. The falling water's momentum is carried below the surface, and water pressure from below pushes this swell back up again. This tug of war between gravity and water pressure creates wave motion

And in some case, with really big waves, they're caused by earth-quakes or earth-slides, both above the water and underwater earth slides.

hi alberello the phases of the moon do pull the tides in and out and the waves come with the mo ving of the tides. More I cannot give you without looking it up in my old college physics and other scientific studies.winds cause ruffling of the water but the pull of the tides causes the waves among other things.I am not a scientist at all but a non published fiction writer.good discussion as it makes us use our little grey cells as Hercule Poriot would have said in Agatha Christie's books. lol

the sun i think have a very little contribution too for the cause of sea waves although overriding by the other external forces, the greater forces wins...
